The last day…The big finals

Romania – 22  Sept 2021 – Wetskills Challenge day 12 By Hanna Verduijn (Utrecht University) & Loredana Spoială (Ramboll South East Europe)   After a long journey the big day came. In the morning we had some time off, so we could sleep a bit longer. This wasn’t the case for the people that were going to give the pitch. They had to practice and practice and then practice some more. We also had to say goodbye to one of the supervisors Floor because unfortunately she had to go back to Netherlands a bit earlier.   At 13.00 it was finally time to meet up… It was really nice to see everyone dressed so well! So everyone took the opportunity to make some group pictures. Everyone was a bit nervous for the finals, especially the people who had to give the pitch. One by one the guests started to arrive and at 14.00 we were...

Work, work, work!!

Romania – 19  Sept 2021 – Wetskills Challenge day 9 By Sanziana Bituleanu (University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest)   After a crazy and fun night in the Old Town of Bucharest we had to come back to work. At 13:00. we met at the Dorm A10 and went to get a shoarma. It was really good. After eating we had to start brainstorming and explore our solution. After almost one week, my team finally found a good solution. And our case owner finally approved it!! You can imagine that we were very pleased. :)   We finally started working on the pitch, poster and paper!! We were a bit late with those but we managed to explain our idea. Because it was the weekend, the faculty was closed, so we went to the dorm, in the study room.   The other teams also worked on their pitch, poster and paper. Even though most...

The open Victoriei road

Romania – 18  Sept 2021 – Wetskills Challenge day 8  By Kjell de Weijer (Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences)   Nearing the end of the first working week the famous weekend has arrived. In the hallways I heard that Saturday was supposed to be a day off, alas this was not the case as Wetskills projects are no easy task. On this sunny day it was time to work on the pitch for the final presentation. In the 30 degrees sun we worked on the pitch. With a nice tan (or sunburn) as a souvenir that I can take back to the Netherlands. Pitching is an important part of the Wetskills programme. Not only is the written part of the pitch important, you also need to work on practicing the pitch itself. Over and over again, repetition is key.   After the work however, there was free time; social activities were planned for...

Pizza Time after Hard Work!!

Romania – 17  Sept 2021 – Wetskills Challenge day 7  By Brwa Mohammed Mahmood (University of Miskolc)   As usual we came to University at nearly 9:00 of Morning and the weather was cloudy. The real work started. It's the end of the first week and we all have to prepare ourselves well for the next week. We are still thinking about a new idea to solve our problem. We have to decide and combine all the ideas and make it into a serious idea. Yesterday was filled with more brainstorming for ideas, on this day we decided which solution is perfect for our case. So we began again with BrainHurricane, we got a new idea for our case, we filled the Canvas Business Model too, it was a really nice and friendly group. It's always fun to spend time with you guys, you are fantastic.   Today was a really different day because for...

Teamwork was never so easy

Romania – 16 Sept 2021 – Wetskills Challenge day 6 Ana Maria Preda (University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest)   We all know that teamwork requires collaboration, trust, respect and especially effective communication between its members, things that many people are scared of and prefer to work alone.   But is this the best decision?   Well, a famous quote says that "a man can be a very important element in a team, but a man cannot make a team". Aside from the fact that dividing a task into smaller duties makes work more efficient, there are many other advantages of teamwork. For example, by working in this way, you can learn many things that would be harder to achieve individually.   At first each of us wanted to work in a different style, Mariëlle wanted to talk without laptops in front of us, Kjell, Anton and Bogdan wanted to look for information, and I wanted...

From Brainstorm to Brain fried

Romania – 15 Sept 2021 – Wetskills Challenge day 5 By Hugo Beekelaar (Wageningen University)   Today, Loes finally got her baggage, which was lost the first day. So, that was already a great start of the day. In the morning we started to finish our plan of actions. However, during this process we started brainstorming again about our case study. Our case study is related to improve the waste separation and to help the city of Zwolle to become the fourth Circular City of the Netherlands before 2050.   During the brainstorm we realised that we still needed to finish the plan of action. So, together we took the focus to work on the plan of action and within no time we made a plan of action. Otherwise Frank and Floor would not have time to read and provide us with feedback. Besides that, we got to know the Business model Canvas. This model...

Wetskills Fairy Tale

Romania – 14 Sept 2021 – Wetskills Challenge day 4 By Cristina Tarcus (Ramboll South East Europe)     It all started on a September day when the manager of the company I work for (Ramboll South East Europe) told me about the Wetskills Water Challenge and if I would be interested in participating. At first, things were not very clear to me, but trying to get out of my own globe I accepted the challenge. It feels like Narnia, but without negative characters !     Tuesday, 14.09.2021, was the first day that brain activity began to go crazy.   In the first part of the day we were introduced to the Wetskills Challenge and the program for the following days. At the same time, Diana Vlad, who participated in Wetskills Holland in 2017, came to tell us about her own experience and to give us some advice.   But the fun part is just beginning ...

Wine, Water & Papanaşi

Romania - 13 Sept 2021 - Wetskills Challenge day 3 By Mariëlle van Es (Wageningen University)   Today was our second day of the small field trip to the country side. Riding around in a bus and seeing some parts of the Romanian landscape was a lot of fun. We also got to know the group a lot better so after this trip we’re ready to start the team work. After breakfast, with as usual way too much but delicious food, it was time to visit a vineyard. The vineyard is part of USMAV and besides making wine they are doing research on wine making and grape cultivation. We learned a lot about wine making and we ate the sweetest grapes ever. It was very nice that they were processing some grapes at that moment and we were able to see how they separate the grapes from the stem and prepare it for the wine...

NOROC! To new friends and lost luggage!

Romania - 11 Sept 2021 - Wetskills Challenge day 1 By Loes Heemskerk (Wetsus Academy)   With a fresh mind and suitcase full of ideas I went on my way to the sunny Bucharest, Romania, for the 50th edition of the Wetskills challenge. At the baggage claim I already met one of the colleagues and the supervisors. Simultaneously, I met my first challenge, my luggage had not arrived in Bucharest. Not a highlight of the day, but it did give me the opportunity to bond a little with my first colleague as we were travelling to the university campus and marvelled at the soviet-classic-modern fusion architecture that was happening outside the car window.   In front of the accommodation building the whole group was gathered and I got a glimpse of the people I would be spending the most of the coming 10 days with. No time to get to know them yet though, we...
