I am particularly drawn to Wetskills because of its unique and impactful approach to addressing real-life water challenges through innovation, collaboration, mentorship, and international knowledge exchange. The programme’s strong emphasis on developing practical, implementable solutions while contributing meaningfully to the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 6 on clean water and sanitation, resonates deeply with my professional values and career path in the water sector.
As an Environmental Officer at the Department of Water and Sanitation, I am actively involved in assessing compliance with Resource Quality Objectives (RQOs) across catchments, ensuring that water resource management aligns with both legislative requirements and sustainability goals. My work includes the regulation and implementation of waste discharge standards, as well as the rollout and operationalisation of the Waste Discharge Charge System, all of which are critical tools for protecting South Africa’s water resources.
I have also been involved in coordinating the Integrated Water Quality Planning (IWQP) course, an experience that strengthened my skills in stakeholder engagement, technical coordination, and capacity building. In addition, I have managed and mentored interns, supporting their professional development and helping to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world water management challenges.
As an alumna of the Wetskills programme (2022), I have firsthand experience of the value this initiative brings in fostering innovative thinking, teamwork, and practical problem-solving. This experience, combined with my academic background, holding an Honours degree in Environmental Management and currently pursuing a Master’s degree, has equipped me with a solid foundation in environmental governance, water quality management, and applied research.
Through Wetskills, I am eager to contribute my technical expertise, particularly in resource quality management, regulatory compliance, and integrated planning, while also supporting participants in developing critical skills such as data interpretation, systems thinking, and solution design. I am passionate about creating an inclusive and collaborative learning environment that encourages participants to share ideas, challenge assumptions, and grow into confident professionals.
I am confident that my professional experience, academic background, and commitment to sustainable water management will allow me to make a meaningful contribution to the Wetskills programme, while inspiring and supporting the next generation of water sector leaders.
