The day started with the usual breakfast a 2-hour one, that was held at the dining hall in
Roodeplaat village. after we had an hour’s trip to Sterkfontein, to visit the Sterkfontein cave which is a
World Heritage Site.
Day 4 breakfast that was held in the dining hall.
We were all excited to visit the cave and learn about the origin of mankind interactively.
The tour was amazing; it is like we got a glimpse of the past through the fossils displayed at
the museum. Learners that there is a group of 300 caves in the region but only in 15 of them
fossils were discovered. The site was declared a World Heritage Site in 2000. In 1947, a
nearly complete skull of an adult female was discovered at the site and named Mrs. Ples
which is classified as an Australopithecus africanus. In 1997, a nearly complete skeleton of
an Australopithecus was found in the caves. Due to its great contribution to archaeological
research the cave was declared The Cradle of Humankind.
