We had the pleasure of doing an interview with two members of the winning team of Wetskills Korea 2024. They share their thoughts on the challenge, their winning solution and their plans for the future.
What did you think of the Wetskills project in general?
Marja: “I really enjoyed getting to know the Korean culture and meeting new people. We were warmly welcomed by everyone, from university staff to company representatives, which made the experience feel very special.”
Laura: “It was a wonderful way to connect with people from different countries who share similar and diverse backgrounds. The chance to network and interact with the case owner gave me insights into consultancy work, which was very rewarding.”
Can you tell us about your winning solution?
Both: “Our solution focused on online participatory science to streamline data collection and reach a broader audience more quickly. We identified a specific region to pilot the project and used UNESCO guidelines on a more localized scale. The idea is to compare online data with traditional, in-person data, creating a system that complements existing methods for more robust data gathering.”
What does participating in Wetskills mean for your future plans?
Marja: “Since I’m already working, this experience helped me realize I want to pursue more training in international water management and development. It gave me clarity about the direction I’d like to take.”
Laura: “Having just graduated in water technology and now searching for a job, this project opened my eyes to a different perspective on water issues. It was a valuable experience that I’ll take with me as I begin my career.”
What was your favorite part of the event?
Both: “The people! We both really enjoyed connecting with everyone, especially during the dinners. That social aspect made the experience even more memorable.”
Marja: “Preparing and improving our pitch was another highlight for me—it was a big learning moment.”
Laura: “For me, it was all about the people I met.”
What would you say to people interested in joining future Wetskills events?
Laura: “I’d tell them it’s a great opportunity to connect with people, network, and really make the most of the experience.”
Marja: “It’s an exciting way to meet new people and explore a different culture. Definitely an experience worth trying!”
