re-use of wastewater to stimulate agricultural production

re-use of wastewater to stimulate agricultural production

Swellendam is the third oldest town in the Republic of South Africa, situated in the Western Cape province. The municipality has around 45.000 inhabitants, scattered over 7 towns. Barrydale is one of these. The community of Swellendam in the Western Cape in South Africa wants to upgrade the Barrydale Waste Water Treatment Works. This case study seeks to investigate the possibilities for the re-use of effluent water for agricultural purposes in this semi-arid region. What crops could be (safely) produced with current effluent quality? And what combination of process adjustments and crop production systems are economically viable?
