Jakarta is the capital of the Republic of Indonesia. It is located in a delta, at the coast of Java island. Thirteen natural and artificial rivers flow through the city and discharge water from the catchments to the Java Sea in the north. Due to land subsidence 40% of the land lays below sea level.
The city is prone to flooding from the sea in the north and rivers from the south and has to cope with several other problems.
