The Al Batinah region accounts for 53% of the total agricultural production in Oman, making it an essential area to Omani economics. By over pumping the farmers have depleted the groundwater aquifer, which was replaced by seawater. They still use this water for irrigation purposes. On top of that the infiltrated saline water will concentrate the salt in lower horizons, preventing new crops to grow, and thereby stopping all agriculture.
