BrainHurricane event Wetskills-Romania 2015

At 8th of June, the first Wetskills BrainHurricane event was organized in Romania. This relatively new part of Wetskills was firstly organized during the Wetskills-The Netherlands 2013 (under the name Future Leaders Event) and improved in last year during the events in Israel and Canada. The Wetskills organization was delighted to have Prof. Jelev (agriculture, Ministry and professor), Mr. Epsica (ApaNova), Prof. Bica (Dean UTCB), Prof Robescu (Politehnica), Mr. Constantin, Mr. Gheorghe, Mr. Potarnihe (all Apele Romane), Mrs. Dobrescu (Netherlands Water Partnership) in the room, including Mr. Feil (National Water Traineeship, case owner). Two other case owners were also connected by Skype. Programme: Introduction by Prof. Robescu Wetskills by Mr. Oost Introduction study cases by case owners (organizations that brought in the study cases) Introduction external experts  (organization and background) Preparation teams Speeddate session Lunch ...

Raising awareness for water pollution

Ahmedabad is a city in the state of Gujarat. The river Sabarmati used to be a seasonal river which is flowing through the city. At the beginning and end of the city a dam was built to maintain water level and create a waterfront, it receives water from the river Narmada. Behind the dam at the end of the city several discharge points of industrial and domestic wastewater effluent can be found. The wastewater here is coming from several STPs, CETP’s and a pipeline carrying wastewater from CETP’s up north. It is also possible wastewater effluent is being discharged before the dam.   The team's challenge is “to enhance the overall water quality of the river Sabarmati for the purpose of enhancing quality of life of Amdawadi in the future”. ...

Water hyacinth for treatment of Industrial wastewater

Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) Vatva is designed to treat 16,000 m3 of effluent per day from 680 industrial member units with primary treatment at their end. With a Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) effluent concentration of 500 mg/L, CETP Vatva does not meet the standard of 250 mg COD/L set by the Gujarat Pollution Control Board. Influent mainly consists of waste waters from dye, dye intermediate, pharmaceutical, textile and rolling mill industries.   Poster Wetskills-India 2015 - Team 2...

Revitalizing old urban water infrastructure

Flooding with polluted water is increasingly a problem in lakes near urban neighbourhoods. This creates unpleasant places which are avoided, and encourages people to leave their own trash and waste near these lakes. This problem should be solved by preventing floods and changing behaviour. This allows urban lake areas to once again become healthy living spaces....

Sustaining agriculture under salinity circumstances in India

The semi-arid Halvad region of Gujarat province is home to a large farming community with two agricultural seasons annually. During the monsoon crops with high water demand are cultivated of which BT (Bacillus thuringiensis) cotton is the main cash crop (90%), followed by sesame (10%). In the winter months, crops that require less water are cultivated, such as cumin as cash crop, but also potatoes and carrots.   The Halvad region experiences low rainfall (400 mm annually) and utilizes more water than can be covered by precipitation and groundwater recharge. Consequently the groundwater table decreases (already 200 m) causing salinity to water and consequently soil. Continuing the current farming practices with flood irrigation worsens irrigation salinity. Irrigation salinity is the rise in saline groundwater and the build-up of salt in the soil surface in irrigated areas. The major causes of irrigation salinity are 1) over-irrigation of farm land, inefficient water use, 2)...

Plastic bottles from Wastewater in Surat India

In Surat the mixing industrial wastewater with domestic wastewater leads to inefficient use of the STP. The challenge is to avoid or reduce accidental mixing of waste water, and bring the city of Surat one step further to their ambition of becoming a resilient city.   Winning Poster Wetskills-India 2015 - Team 1...

Multipurpose dams in flash flood prone areas

Romania is prone to flash floods occurring from the higher grounds in the country. The flash floods occur during the whole year. Meanwhile droughts in the summer periods can occur in the delta areas. Romania constructed many small and large dams to manage the water, and the flash floods. Are there applicable solutions thinkable where flashflood measures (i.e. dams) which also yield agriculture in dry periods; where are these best located and how can these measures be implemented quickest and to most efficient?   Wetskills Poster team 4 - VP Delta...

Impact of food waste disposers on the wastewater system of Amsterdam

Even though common in the US, the use of food waste disposers is currently prohibited in the Netherlands due to concerns of potential negative impacts on sewage infrastructure and wastewater treatment plants. Yet within the broader trend of transforming wastewater treatment facilities into resource recovery plants, adding additional organic load to the wastewater could be the key to making resource recovery of various products viable. Insinkerator and Waternet therefore challenge the Wetskills participants to come up with an evaluation of the potential benefits and impacts of food waste disposers on the urban water cycle.   Wetskills Poster team 5 - Insinkerator...

Raising water-quality awareness among greenhouse entrepreneurs

Fresh water to use in greenhouses is not a scarce product in the Netherlands. Compared to other substantial financial expenses for greenhouses like energy and wages, it is actually quite cheap. But the environmental impact of discharging water (containing nutrients and pesticides) to the nearby canals or ditches is very large. In areas with much greenhouse activity the water quality is low despite regulations from the government. Therefore Hoogheemraadschap van Delfland is looking for a way to create more awareness among the entrepreneurs so that they feel responsible for their own pollution. The challenge to the participants: which technical, social or other solution is necessary to create such awareness for water quality issues?   Wetskills Poster team 4 - Hoogheemraadschap van Delfland...
