SUMMARY:Wetskills-United Arab Emirates 2022
DESCRIPTION:About The Event\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]United Arab Emirates 2022: from WorldExpo Shanghai to Dubai!\nWetskills Foundation and partners organized another great water challenge event: in Dubai\, United Arab Emirates. \nIn a hybrid format (online with some in-person activities) participants from various countries (UAE\, The Netherlands\, Colombia\, India\, Nigeria\, Germany) worked together in teams with each its own challenge. The cases are provided by our partners UAE University\, RVO\, PureBlue Water and Witteveen+Bos\, in close cooperation with the Dutch Dubai programme of The Netherlands government. \nDuring the Finals on Sunday 16 January\, the teams presented the results to an international jury in The Netherlands Pavilion of the Dubai 2020 World Expo. This hybrid event was also the final part of the Wetskills 10 years Jubilee Celebrations. \n[vc_single_image image=”59143″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Wetskills once started at the Shanghai WorldExpo 2010\, so Wetskills ‘bridged’ the two WorldExpos and looked back to the results of many Wetskills events in many countries. \nThe Jury announced Team Falaj 2.0 as the winning team\, with their innovative but applicable concept to improve water management on small farm. ‘Most UAE small farms use groundwater for crop irrigation. Low groundwater levels and salinization are a growing problem\, and various water management strategies have already been proposed. The Wetskills team came up with a Tool to support farmers in identifying which strategy is most feasible for their own farm.’ This case was formulated by UAE University\, to focus on a very challenging problem. \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”59206″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””]Read the article in Gulf Today: ‘Dutch PM Mark Rutte dubs UAE as living hub of innovative business‘ with a part about Wetskills-United Arab Emirates 2022; Water reuse is one of the opportunities to mitigate the water stress in those cities. PureBlue’s decentral wastewater treatment units treat up until natural water quality and beyond. The goal is to enforce blue networks\, the concatenation of water bodies and infrastructure\, to let green networks\, like parks\, nature reserves and oases grow. PureBlue looks for creative implementation of their units in UAE cities to bring fresh water to locations that will benefit most from it. In addition\, social innovation is of large importance to convince people of the safety and environmental friendliness of treated wastewater. \nCase 2: A Sustainable Alternative to Water in Plastic\nCase owner: RVO.nl \nOn a regular day millions of people encounter one or more single use plastic water bottle. It is just a normal routine but the effect that it has on our planet is devastating to the entire ecosystem. A plastic bottle does not simply disappear once we recycle it or throw it away\, it is not biodegradable and becomes land and ocean litter. Organizations that go through a particularly high volume of plastic bottles consumption are University Campuses with vending machines and cafeteria and Hotels with plastic bottles distributed in each guest room. How can the use of “hydration stations” within these institutions be the solution to drastically reduce the impact that single use plastic has on the environment? \nPitch & Poster \n[vc_single_image image=”59230″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” qode_css_animation=””]Pitch & Poster \n[vc_single_image image=”59229″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space height=”64px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case 3: Decision-making tool for water management at small farms in UAE\nCase owner: United Arab Emirates University  \nPrivately owned farms of a size between two and six ha are very common in the UAE\, and mostly rely on groundwater for crop irrigation. In recent years the productivity of many of these farms has been threatened by increasing groundwater depletion and salinization. Various management strategies have been proposed to slow down groundwater deterioration and/or sustain agricultural production under increasing salinity. tools to facilitate such water management decision making are so far not available. It will maximize revenues at the farm level\, and/or create an overall long-term sustainability and environmental safety. How could a tool support an individual farmer or decision identifying of the most feasible water management strategy for UAE’s small farms? \nCase 4: Circular carbon zero water and resources recovery plant\nCase owner: Witteveen+Bos (The Netherlands) \nThe global water sector contributes about 5% of greenhouse gas (GHG)\, and this is calculated without the process-related emissions of CH4\, CO2 and N2O due to biological used water treatment. The UWTP’s are getting more efficient every day and water loops are being closed in municipal and industrial settings. However\, by improving removal performances the carbon emissions rise by energy demand\, chemical use\, and process emission. Improving water quality leads to increasing CO2 emissions. The Water and Resources Refinery\, developed by Witteveen+Bos and partners leads to a circular zero carbon used water treatment. How can the Water and Resources Refinery also solve these challenges for the United Arab Emirates and Singapore creating a future-proof and climate resilient water sector? \nPitch & Poster \n[vc_single_image image=”59228″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” qode_css_animation=””]Pitch & Poster \n[vc_single_image image=”59227″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Event Partners\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”57038″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”58274″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”53049″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52334″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”59130″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”56310″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”59129″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”57060″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”53877″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”54075″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”58278″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52246″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Movie of Wetskills-Oman 2019\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Finals of Wetskills-Oman 2020\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Join this Wetskills event!

SUMMARY:Wetskills-South Africa 2018
DESCRIPTION:About The Event\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Wetskills concludes the fourth South African edition! \nBye Day Zero wins the fourth Wetskills Water Challenges in South Africa (after Cape Town 2012\, Nelspruit 2014 and Durban 2016). Read about the great finals at the WISA 2018 Conference in Cape Town in presence of Minister Gugile Nkwinti of Water and Sanitation of South Africa and Dutch Special Water Envoy Henk Ovink here. \nThe Wetskills Foundation with partners Department for Water and Sanitation\, Embassy of the Kingdom of The Netherlands\, Water Institute for Southern Africa and Future Water Center of University of Cape Town organized the fourth edition of Wetskills in South Africa: Back to Cape Town (period: 16 – 27 June 2018). Bachelor\, Master\, PhD students and recent graduates worked together in mixed team on water challenges provided by organizations of the local and international water sector. This edition of Wetskills took the participants to the ‘Mother City’ Cape Town and its magnificent surroundings. city of Seoul for about twoweeks\, visiting interesting and relevant water-related locations in and around Cape Town\, experiencing the big drought and the measures taken and having the finals and awarding at the biannual WISA 2018 Conference. \nRead more about this Wetskills Water Challenge via our Social Media and publications! \n\nInformation about Wetskills programme\, our events in South Africa and the results & follow-up\nFor more information\, contact Johan Oost (johan.oost@wetskills.com). \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][no_blockquote text=”‘It was such a wonderful experiences. Recent years Non Profit Company AquaDactics was founded to sustain training activities in the South Africa in a self-supportive way. AquaDactics’ philosophy of creating and maintaining a Pool of local Trainers and development of training material with a focus on the practice was co-created\, spread and acknowledge by various partners in the South African water sector. However it is still waiting for a spark to get this rolling. How can we create this spark in coming year? \nCase 2: Transboundary basin management: the challenge of creating a win-win situation\nCase owner: Department of Water Affairs Lesotho \nWater is one of the most important natural resources of Lesotho. The unique geographic location positions Lesotho as the ‘Water Tower’ of Southern Africa. Its wetlands sustain the perennial water flow of a.o the Senqu-Orange river system\, shared by three other riparian states: South Africa\, Namibia and Botswana. Unfortunately\, the water system in Lesotho is threatened by degradation and climate change\, and so are its downstream communities\, who are for their economic activities and water availability very much depending on quality water coming from Lesotho. How can downstream riparians influence the situation in the upstream watershed\, of which they are extremely dependent? \nCase 1: Floods and droughts: keeping the public awareness after the crisis\nCase owner: Water Authority Drents Overijsselse Delta \nWater infrastructure as dams and dikes have long protected societies from too little or too much water. Citizens are however unaware of the means necessary to achieve water security. The exception are extreme events\, when dams run empty of dikes fail\, then people are aware. As extreme weather patterns intensify and societies have become more dependent on their water resources\, it is critical to keep citizen awareness alive to reduce the impacts and consequences in case a flood or drought occurs. \nFinal poster and pitch \n[vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”54348″][vc_empty_space height=”8px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Final poster and pitch \n[vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”54349″][vc_empty_space height=”8px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Final poster and pitch \n[vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”54350″][vc_empty_space height=”8px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case 4: A YES to Water Revenue Collection with…\nCase owner: Kingfisher programme & Water Authority Rijnland \n\n\n\nPaying for water management and treatment is a real challenge in parts of South Africa. Last year approximately 160 municipalities did not paid a cent of their water bills\, although it is written in national laws that for water use and water pollution should be paid. Since the Dutch waterboards have a long- standing relation with many parties in the South-African water sector\, there may be opportunities to collaborate on the issue of ‘the polluter pays’\, and see what works and what does not in the Dutch setting that could be implemented in the South-African system\, and vice versa. From this comparative analysis\, can you think of creative ways of how more willingness can be created in both countries to have polluters (sustainably) pay for water? \n\n\n\nCase 5: Climate Scan in African Cities\nCase owner: Tauw \n\n\n\nClimate change is here to stay\, so we have to adapt. From surveys around the world (but mainly from Europe) it is concluded that people are in need of Best Management Practices (BMP) to motivate them to implement climate adaptation measures: both technical and governance aspects. International interactive open source tools (in our case www.climatescan.nl\, check it out!) are used to promote engagement with stakeholders in the field of climate change and related environmental issues. But their potential is often not fully utilised. Can you help us with the question how to promote climate adaptation specifically in Africa\, and make stakeholders implement and share their BMPs? \n\n\n\nCase 6: Avoid Day Zero due to lowering Capetonians’ Water Footprint\nCase owner: City of Cape Town & Water Footprint Implementation \n\n\n\nCape Town was suffering the most serious drought in recent years. In 2018\, the forecasts even warned for a Day Zero: the day when supply would come to an end. A large water saving campaign was (successfully) launched to lower the individual direct water consumption to almost a quarter of the normal use\, at 50 l per capita per day. However\, looking at the total Water Footprint of consumption\, this direct water use is only just over 1% of the total of 3400 l per capita that is consumed each day. The remaining 99% of the water consumption is hidden in the production and use of cloths\, food\, drinks\, transportation\, etc. Taking measures in that 99% ‘hidden’ water use may lead to lower scarcity levels in the future\, at perhaps a lower effort than for the direct consumption? \n\n\n\nFinal poster and pitch \n[vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”54351″][vc_empty_space height=”8px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Final poster and pitch \n[vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”54352″][vc_empty_space height=”8px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Final poster and pitch \n[vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”54353″][vc_empty_space height=”8px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Do you also want to submit a challenge and get an out-of-the-box concept (Pitch and Poster) in one of our Wetskills event worldwide? SUMMARY:Wetskills-Israel 2017
DESCRIPTION:About The Event\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Wetskills goes to Israel again!\nAfter four years Wetskills is back in Israel (link). Wetskills-Israel 2017: international participants from Israeli and Dutch universities worked in mixed teams on cases from Netafim (drip irrigation)\, Mekorot (pollutants in drinking water system) and Mey Avivim water company Tel Aviv (odor control). Our local host was again Grand Water Research Institute of Technion University in Haifa\, supported by the College of Sea of Galilee. \nAfter a nice Haifa Tour the participants went to some sites of national water carrier and Lake Kinnereth for water and cultural sites. As a kick-start of the working days\, the BrainHurricane was organized with speeddate sessions with various experts in the water industry. After this the teams went further with brainstorming. All teams had a dedicated field trip toabout the case as well.  \n\nThe Wetskills finals and awarding will be organized in the frame of the WATEC Conference and Exhibition in Tel Aviv: LINK. During a business reception at the residence of the Dutch Ambassador the teams pitched their solutions to a jury. Also the posters were displayed at the same time. The winning team was Oder Control with a concept to mitigate the odor from the sewer in Tel Aviv. \n\n\nMore information about the event and results\nFor more information contact Rick Hogeboom (rick.hogeboom@wetskills.com) or Johan Oost (johan.oost@wetskills.com). The most common sources of water for irrigation are surface water (lakes and rivers) and groundwater (aquifers). However\, in some areas in the world\, treated wastewater is used. One of the main problems of using treated wastewater for irrigation is the high concentration of organic matter\, which may cause drippers to clog. It is up to the team to solve is how NETAFIM can deal with drippers clogging by organic matter when treated waste water is used as a source of irrigation\, in a simple\, cheap\, low maintenance and safe manner. \nCase 2: Bio-monitoring solutions to detect pollutants in drinking water systems\nCase owner: Mekorot \nIn protecting our drinking water supplies\, detection of source water contaminants plays a vital role for Mekorot\, Israel’s national water company. Accidental chemical spills\, extreme weather events\, terror threats\, and operational faults may all cause the spread of contaminants into the water supply system. We therefore use bio-monitoring systems (that is\, a system that can assess the toxicity of water samples by monitoring living organism behavior) to detect contaminants in the water supply system. It is up to the team to think of how Mekorot can create a new\, continuous\, online bio-monitoring system that will combine the use of aquatic organisms with cutting edge technology\, to provide early warning for contaminants entering a drinking water system. \nCase 3: Odor prevention on municipal sewage \nCase owner: Mey-Avivim\, Tel-Aviv Water Company \nSewage Typical Smell (STS) can cause a substantial nuisance to most human noses. When this kind of typical smell appears in the surroundings of a Wastewater Treatment Plant\, its origins are known and therefore can be specifically treated. On the other hand\, when STS appears in a municipal area\, its origins are much harder to detect and locate. In case repeated complaints from the same location are reported\, the TAWC will check a number of possible causes\, such as clogging\, dead animals\, or cross-connections between sewage and drainage systems. However\, in some cases the STS origins and causes are none of the above\, and are still left unidentified.  It is up to the team to think of a system that can detect and eliminate persistent Sewage Typical Smell in municipal areas. \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Final Poster and Pitch \n[vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”53897″][vc_empty_space height=”8px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Final Poster and Pitch \n[vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”53898″][vc_empty_space height=”8px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Final Poster and Pitch \n[vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”53899″][vc_empty_space height=”8px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Do you also want to submit a challenge and get an out-of-the-box concept (Pitch and Poster) in one of our Wetskills event worldwide? Water for drinking and agriculture is becoming under stress\, while the water use is growing. Since the acknowledgement of this challenge in 1976\, numerous of (opinions about) technical measures did not prevent the groundwater becoming more saline. An institutional change could enforce sustainable water management. It is time find (adapted) governmental bodies and create their respective (legal) responsibilities\, based on the current situation. Better water governance leads to better water management and avoid the increase of groundwater salination in Gujarat. \nCase 2: Improving industrial waste water treatment for Odhav Industrial Estate in Ahmedabad \nCase owner: Odhav Enviro Projects Ltd (OEPL) \nThe Odhav Industrial Estate accommodates 219 small and medium scale industrial units just East of Ahmedabad. The units produce a variety of products\, including pharmaceuticals and drugs\, dyes\, pigments\, all sorts of chemicals and textiles. The businesses discharge their waste water – sometimes after pre-treating it – to a Collective Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) and Treatment\, Storage and Disposal Facility (TSDF)\, where the waste water is treated before it discharges through a big pipeline into the River Sabarmati. The quality of the incoming waste water differs per industrial unit and over time. This makes it difficult for the CETP/TSDF operators to guarantee a consistent after-treatment effluent quality\, which at the moment sometimes exceeds the set standards for certain substances. It is up to the team to find out how Odhav Enviro Projects Ltd can improve the industrial waste water treatment process to meet water quality standards of the effluent. \nCase 3: Designing a rainwater harvesting system for Silver Oak College campus \nCase owner: Silver Oak College of Engineering & Technology (SOCET) \nSilver Oak College of Engineering and Technology (SOCET) is a new college in Ahmedabad established in 2009\, home to about 4000 students and sitting on a nice campus consisting of four major buildings with high class infrastructure. Conserving water for coming generation is high on our agenda. Clean freshwater\, however\, is scarce because of a high demand\, pollution and a relatively low supply in arid Ahmedabad. Rainwater harvesting is a promising solution to a variety of issues faced: providing sufficient domestic supply during the dry season\, replenishing groundwater storage\, clogging of storm drains during heavy showers\, reducing groundwater pollution and erosion\, reducing cost of current supply system and saving on pumping costs of groundwater SOCET wants to reap these benefits on their campus. It is up to the teams to find out how SOCET campus can best benefit from a rainwater harvesting system. \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case 4: Bottled biogas from the Sewage Treatment Plant of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation \nCase owner: Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) \nAhmedabad Municipal Corporation has set up a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) of capacity 180 million liters per day. The sewage is treated up to secondary treatment by anaerobic digesters and fine bubble diffused aeration. More than 10000 m3 of biogas is generated from anaerobic digester which is refined and bottled for further uses so as to serve the purpose of pollution prevention and revenue generation from the STP. Bottling of biogas is facilitated by a bottling unit- established nearby to the STP. One problem we face\, however\, is that the biogas so produced from the STP has been observed to contain excessive oxygen in it. This oxygen deteriorates the compression rate of the biogas. This issue needs to be resolved. Moreover\, we ask your help in finding strategies to achieve the full potential of biogas bottling. It is up to the team to find out how AMC can resolve current issues\, as well as how AMC can best benefit from our STP and biogas bottling plant? \nCase 5: Floating pump for Ahmedabad urban water planning \nCase owner: Darling Pumps (in cooperation with ETEC & Robusto Industrial) \nAhmedabad is a fast growing city with many water challenges. Due to the limited rainfall\, supplying sufficient water to agriculture\, households and industries can be challenging. On the other hand\, when it rains\, flash floods can occur. In case of both water shortages and excess water\, the innovative floating pumps by Robusto Industrial can contribute to a robust urban water strategy for Ahmedabad. But how? And where? And by whom? The floating pumps are quickly installed\, no prior infrastructure is required\, they are impervious to adverse operating conditions such as strong currents or foreign materials and they are durable. It is up to the team to find out how the floating pumps by Robusto Industrial can be part of the urban water management plan for Ahmedabad?” \n[vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”52581\,52593\,52603\,52597\,52573″ column_number=”5″ grayscale=”no” hover_icon=”none” images_space=”gallery_with_space”]Event Partners\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”52157″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52154″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52334″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”51924″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”52373″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52522″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52521″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52520″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”52634″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”51210″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52183″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52155″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””]
