Upcoming national and European legislation requires extra removal of nutrients and medicine\, as well as system designs that emit less greenhouse gas\, recover materials from the wastewater and buildings built in a circular manner. Other challenges are the market\, with limited room for adjustments to all wastewater treatment plants\, a decrease in available employees with technical skills to operate In WWTP‘s and a shift in the skills necessary in this branch. These combined challenges offer a unique opportunity to rethink the current wastewater treatment system and implement fundamental changes. The goal of this case is to design a wastewater treatment system (collection\, transport and treatment of wastewater) from scratch\, without being hindered by current systems.  \nCase 2: Biodiversity and flood safety combined.\nCase owner: Water Authority Delfland \nBiodiversity is steadily losing grounds in Europe\, and especially in the Netherlands the number of species is recklessly decreasing. Levees are potential sanctuaries for diverse plants and animals as they are where water meets land for much of the Netherlands\, and they are long stretches of green and blue crossing the country. One obstacle however is high maintenance and the difficulty of inspecting the levees when they are overgrown with vegetation. For these reasons governing bodies are hesitant to implement biodiverse planting measures. Delfland is looking for methods or potential locations where biodiverse measures can be implemented without overly increasing costs and needed manpower for maintenance. \nCase 3: Closing the funding gap for Non-Revenue Water Reduction in South Africa \nCase owner: Department of Water and Sanitation of South Africa \nSouth Africa loses nearly half of its treated drinking water before it generates any revenue due to non-revenue water\, which includes leaks\, faulty metering\, illegal connections\, and billing inefficiencies. This not only wastes water but costs municipalities billions of rand annually\, threatening financial and service sustainability. The Department of Water and Sanitation is seeking innovative financing solutions to help municipalities systematically reduce NRW\, turning water savings into tangible revenue. One example is the Water Footprint Compensation method\, where private companies invest in water management projects to balance the water system. Wetskills participants are challenged to design scalable\, accountable\, and bankable funding models that combine public and private investment\, verify results\, and incentivize long-term action. \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Poster & pitch \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”64859″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” img_link_target=”_blank” css=””]Poster & pitch – Winning team! congratulations Jen\, Fleur\, Bart and Precious \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”64857″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” img_link_target=”_blank” css=””]Poster & pitch \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”64858″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” img_link_target=”_blank” css=””]Event Partners\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”64868″ img_size=”220×125″ alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52334″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”64473″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”64865″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”53101″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52254″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”53563″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”54106″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”64866″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”57038″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”57060″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”57060″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””]Impression of Wetskills at World Expo 2022 in Dubai\n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Previous Wetskills events in East Asia (South Korea\, China\, Taiwan and Japan)\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]

SUMMARY:Wetskills-USA 2023 (UN)
DESCRIPTION:About The Event\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””]Wetskills event at the UN 2023 Water Conference\nThe United Nations organized the Water Conference 2023 at the UN Headquarters in New York from 22 to 24 March 2023. Tajikistan and The Netherlands were co-hosting this unique water event\, and Henk Ovink\, Dutch Special Envoy International Water Affairs and Wetskills Ambassador\, had invited the Wetskills Team to organize a Water Challenge event during this UN Conference: Wetskills-USA 2023 (UN)! \nOur partners in this event were the UN2023 GameChanger Challenge (UN2023-GCC) by Wavemakers United and IHE Delft\, and the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. \nThe winning ideas of the UN2023-GCC challenge were adopted as cases for our Wetskills challenge. So\, the Wetskills teams picked up their ideas\, to co-create a first step towards implementation. The ideas were presented at a special workshop on youth engagement during the New York Water Week. \nEvent info\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””]Programme Wetskills-USA 2023 \nTerms & Conditions Wetskills-USA 2023 \nAttend on FacebookFollow Wetskills\nFacebookXInstagramLinkedInYouTube\nParticipants of Wetskills-USA (UN) 2023\n[vc_single_image image=”61731″ img_size=”full”]Watch the Video of Wetskills-USA (UN) 2023\nEvent Blogs\nAllWetskills-United States 202313	\n \n Reflection Wetskills Team member LoayBlogs\, News\, Wetskills-United States 20233 years agoLoay Alatrash (Wetskills Team member\, World Waternet and Young Expert Programme\, Palestine) Different cultures\, several religions\, divers group for one goal\, Innovation solutions for more clean water. Ten days in New… \n \n	\n \n Tody was ‘bring and share’ with our cultural foodsBlogs\, Wetskills-United States 20233 years agoWetskills-USA 2023\, by Ayanda Mafunda (Department of Water and Sanitation (SA)) – Today we began the day as we always do\, with the hustle and bustle of catching the train… \n \n	\n \n We are very close to our pitch dayBlogs\, Wetskills-United States 20233 years agoWetskills-USA 2023\, by Thaiane Fatima Maciel dos Santos – Our Saturday started quite differently in NYC. Due to reduction in winter precipitation\, water flow is erratic during the spring sowing season\, impacting agriculture. Increase in average temperatures and precipitation during summers elevates the frequency of flash floods. Since the 12th century\, local communities have used the annual freeze-thaw cycle to conserve water. New challenges such as climate change\, water scarcity and population growth ask for a modernizing perspective of ancient practices. How can Mountainous areas and their communities ensure water availability during the year? Is the concept of artificial glaciers the key to a solution? \nCase 2: Plastic collection & recycling system \nCase owner: Team Oceanic (South Africa) \nPlastic pollution is a global problem. The sources are not always clear\, leaving land spills and beaches overflowing with plastic litter. This leads to environmental challenges\, especially for animals\, as well as health risks. Efforts intended to tackle the plastic pollution problem are either focused on reducing the plastics: using less plastic in products or using recycled plastic\, or efforts are focused on collecting plastics. If both these strategies are to be successful\, the local community needs to be involved. Within the vision of the Circular Economy\, can local communities combine these strategies and work towards a closed loop of plastic production\, consumption and recycling? \nCase 3: Rainwater harvesting systems for resilient cities \nCase owner: Team Pauwes (Ghana/Nigeria) \nGrowing water scarcity\, climate change\, rapid urbanization\, and increased demand for water are a combination of challenges best described as a wicked problem. For cities and communities to become resilient\, the long-term benefits of using alternative water sources\, such as rainwater\, are key. Rainwater harvesting techniques have been used for thousands of years. How can we ensure these approaches are future proof? Think of new technologies and modernization\, but also how to involve the local community\, raise awareness and education. How can we save and secure (rain)water in cities? \nCase 4: Nature based solutions in water treatment processes \nCase owner: Team Algaenius (The Netherlands)\n \nWater scarcity is a growing problem. Using and reusing our water in a smart and circular way\, becomes therefore essential. Current water treatment processes are advanced and able to produce sufficiently clean water\, so it returns to nature\, rivers and oceans in a safe way. However\, this is not completely circular. Thinking like nature\, in other words: nature-based innovations\, offer a different aspect of solutions. How can we create a water treatment process that is both future proof and nature inclusive? How can Nature Based Solutions contribute to water treatment processes? \nCase 5: Smart technologies in water analysis \nCase owner: Team Sigmuan (The Philippines)\n \nIndustrialization caused the contamination of surface and groundwater with harmful pollutants. These include petroleum hydrocarbons\, urban and agricultural runoffs\, and pharmaceuticals. The Quality monitoring and data-gathering is essential to improve water quality and signal areas that deserve more attention. However\, resources are limited in both technical\, financial and human capital terms – especially in communities that are less accessible (e.g. indigenous people\, mountainous areas\, SIDS). How can this limitation be overcome by using smart technologies\, to reduce the impact of water quality disasters and ensure clean\, affordable water for consumption and production. \nEvent Partners

SUMMARY:Wetskills-Japan 2021 (online)
DESCRIPTION:About The Event\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]‘Olympic’ Wetskills-Japan 2021 was organized before and during the Olympic Games in Tokyo \nThis new edition of Wetskills Challenge started on 29 June 2021 with a 6-weeks online programme of 1-2 days per week. Participants were students and young professionals from various nationalities and background\, but studying and working in Japan and The Netherlands. They worked in international teams on challenging water-energy-food issues. \nDuring the Finals on August 5\, they presented their ideas in an online event\, followed by the Awarding Ceremony. \n \nThe central theme ‘Water-Energy-Food Nexus’ is also the main focus of the WorldExpo Dubai 2021\, where Wetskills Foundation will be present as well. All cases will be aligned to this theme and also include topics outside the water domain. \nThe 2020-2021 central theme of Wetskills Events\, celebrating 10 years of Wetskills:\n‘VALUING FUTURE WATER LEADERS SHAKING THE WATER-ENERGY-FOOD COCKTAIL WITH THEIR INCLUSIVE & CATALYTIC CAPACITY’. \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Watch the Finals & Awarding\n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Event info\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Programme W@tskills-Japan 2021\n \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][no_button icon_pack=”font_awesome” fa_icon=”fa-facebook” icon_position=”right” target=”_self” font_weight=”” text=”Attend on Facebook” link=”https://www.facebook.com/events/457471881845424/” icon_color=”#ffffff”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Watch the announcement of Wetskills-Japan 2021 \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Watch the Movie of the previous Olympic Wetskills edition: South Korea 2018 \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Follow Wetskills\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][no_icons icon_pack=”font_elegant” fa_icon=”fa-facebook” fa_size=”fa-lg” custom_size=”30″ type=”normal” rotated_shape=”no” icon_shadow=”no” inner_border=”no” back_to_top_icon=”” link=”https://www.facebook.com/Wetskills-496271977097972″ anchor_icon=”” target=”_blank” icon_color=”#0076b2″ hover_icon_color=”#43dbbd” margin=”0px 12px 0px 0px” fe_icon=”social_facebook”]     [no_icons icon_pack=”font_elegant” fa_icon=”fa-twitter” fa_size=”fa-lg” custom_size=”30″ type=”normal” rotated_shape=”no” icon_shadow=”no” inner_border=”no” back_to_top_icon=”” link=”http://twitter.com/wetskills” anchor_icon=”” target=”_blank” icon_color=”#0076b2″ hover_icon_color=”#43dbbd” margin=”0px 12px 0px 0px” fe_icon=”social_twitter”]     [no_icons icon_pack=”font_elegant” fa_icon=”fa-instagram” fa_size=”fa-lg” custom_size=”30″ type=”normal” rotated_shape=”no” icon_shadow=”no” inner_border=”no” back_to_top_icon=”” link=”https://www.instagram.com/wetskills/” anchor_icon=”” target=”_blank” icon_color=”#0076b2″ hover_icon_color=”#43dbbd” margin=”0px 12px 0px 0px” fe_icon=”social_instagram”]     [no_icons icon_pack=”font_elegant” fa_icon=”fa-twitter” fa_size=”fa-lg” custom_size=”30″ type=”normal” rotated_shape=”no” icon_shadow=”no” inner_border=”no” back_to_top_icon=”” link=”https://www.linkedin.com/groups/2949484″ anchor_icon=”” target=”_blank” icon_color=”#0076b2″ hover_icon_color=”#43dbbd” margin=”0px 12px 0px 0px” fe_icon=”social_linkedin”]     [no_icons icon_pack=”font_elegant” fa_icon=”fa-youtube-square” fe_icon=”social_youtube” fa_size=”fa-lg” custom_size=”30″ type=”normal” rotated_shape=”no” icon_shadow=”no” inner_border=”no” back_to_top_icon=”” link=”https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJmPNM9roCkR1uvgJMHqpvA” anchor_icon=”” target=”_blank” icon_color=”#0076b2″ hover_icon_color=”#43dbbd” margin=”0px 12px 0px 0px”] \nWetskills congratulates our Ambassador Kiran Badloe\n[vc_single_image image=”58466″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””]Kiran Badloe\, windsurfing\, won the Olympic golden medal in Tokyo last week. The wind farm industry is constantly innovating and apart from new wind farms being built\, current wind farms are being replaced or reimagined. As wind energy is aiding us in our mission towards a sustainable future in Japan and the Netherlands\, solutions must be found that incorporate the wishes of all stakeholders involved in the space used at sea. These stakeholders include fishermen\, ecologists\, governments\, shipping companies\, wind farm developers and the general public\, to name a few. Because of the variety of stakeholders and their interests it is a challenge to divide this space\, and this is where multi-use and repurposing of wind farms plays an important role. How can we make sure that multiple stakeholders can mutually benefit from the same sea space in harmony? \nCase 2: Multi-layer flood safety: impact on land & water planning\nCase owner: Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier (The Netherlands) \nBoth Japan and The Netherlands have been qualified as high-risk countries that have to deal with climate change effects (World Risk Report 2016\, WEF). Due to climate change extreme weather events and storm surges will occur more frequent. For a flood prone country as the Netherlands with a long tradition on water management\, risks of disrupting water crises caused by climate change are increasing. Working with the so-called multi-layer approach is becoming the major policy to prepare the country for the increased probability of flood events and its impact on society. How can both Japan and The Netherlands benefit of the multi-layer safety approach to develop adaptive strategies for maintaining their high level of society under increasing threats of flood events? \nCase 3: A new use of rainwater assets in a strategy for climate adaptation\nCase owners: Waternet Amsterdam Utility (The Netherlands)\n \nClimate change is becoming more and more visible in the city of Amsterdam. The past years there were multiple incidents of severe rainfall\, but also an increase in heat waves and extreme droughts.
