SUMMARY:SunGlacier Challenge in Oman
DESCRIPTION:About The Event\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]A global challenge to accelerate dew harvesting techniques that the world needs!\nThe partners of the SunGlacier Challenge invited teams of universities worldwide to join this unique challenge in Oman (20-25 March 2018) to make water from the air! Eventually 3 Dutch and Omani teams created their own SunGlacier (based on some provides techniques). On 22 March the challenge started with the 48 hours run. Main goal: going further with the latest techniques to provide the world with a new\, reliable and cheap water source! \nRead the daily blogs about the event and the experiences of participants and challenge partners or follow the Wetskills Social Media (Twitter\, Facebook and Instagram). \n\n  \nThis edition is the pilot of a five year programme. The partners aim to organize this SunGlacier Challenge yearly to speed up the information\, insights and knowledge of this technique for water supply. If you are interested\, contact Johan Oost (johan.oost@wetskills.com). \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Practical information\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][no_button icon_pack=”font_awesome” fa_icon=”fa-facebook” icon_position=”right” target=”_self” font_weight=”” text=”Attend on Facebook” link=”https://www.facebook.com/events/1887814874789933/” icon_color=”#ffffff”][vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Programme:  \n\n20 March: Arrival\n21 March: Welcome\, preparation and testing\n22 March: Workshop at MEDRC\, start 48 hour run\n23 March: check devices\, cultural and social programme\n24 March: End of 48 run\, preparing for presentation\, Farewell dinner\n25 March: World Water Day celebration Sultan Qaboos University\, presentation\, awarding winners\n\n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Background\nIn 2010 Artist Ap Verheggen started the “Art meets Science” project SunGlacier: Harvest Water from Air\, fully powered by Solar Energy. With a team of volunteering experts ‘the SunGlacier Team’ he tested the limits to investigate how small and cheap we can build a water harvest machine that is off-grid\, powered by solar energy. Because solar energy can be limited and variable – with cloud cover and night cycles – we faced the challenge to use all energy as efficient as possible. The first SunGlacier sculpture is built with existing\, off-the-shelf technology\, but the latest versions are built with our own custom-designed technology. \nAp Verheggen combined design and technology and built several prototypes and one of them: “DC03” even runs without a battery\, a convertor\, or a fan. So nearly no maintenance and nothing can break. A cheap Peltier cooler is directly connected to a small solar panel and it makes drops of water. This technology is so promising because of low costs and durable components that Ap published all details on his website www.SunGlacier.com \nSunGlacier Challenge\nThe accelerate the speed of development of this promising SunGlacier technology\, some partners joined forces and decided to launch the SunGlacier Challenge\, with the goal to produce water out of air\, powered by solar energy. The competition location will be Oman\, with the partner Sultan Qaboos University. \nThe partners invite teams teams of university students\, young professionals from knowledge institutes or groups of friends in the field to build their own SunGlacier and join this competition. Note: The participants needs to be younger than 35 years. \nProgramme: Challenge\, Conference and social activities\nAfter the SunGlacier Challenge a Conference will be organized to learn more about the techniques from each other. Experts will be asked to join the Conference programme. \nIn the SunGlacier Challenge programme various social and cultural activities will be organized to meet each other and experience the culture and country of Oman. \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”53058\,53057\,53056\,53055″ column_number=”5″ grayscale=”no” hover_icon=”none” images_space=”gallery_with_space”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]The Rules\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]The techniques\nThe techniques of SunGlacier will be public here. This is the basic information to use for your own SunGlacier. You can also make your own SunGlacier! \nThe competition\nMaximum 15 teams from various countries worldwide will be selected for this event. \nEvery team will get a standard solar pannel of 50 or 250 Watt (peak). Panel can turn with the sun if designed. A Peltier element (if used) can be replaced one time\, when broken. The winner of the competition is based on a 48 hours run for 50 or 250 Watt. \nSunGlacier is an Art Project so a special award will be provided for “best design” (based on a jury’s decision under chair of Ap Verheggen). \nThe prices will be announced in a later stage\, after attracting more partners. \nApplication deadlines\nThe official registration is via the registration button of this website. If you are interested as and/or already formed a team\, please send Mr. Tim van der Staaij an email. \nCosts\nThe participation of this challenge and the conference afterwards is free. Project partners and Sponsors will cover the costs. \nHowever the travel of the student team and the SunGlacier\, the accommodation and daily costs needs to be paid by the participating team. The team is allowed to find sponsors. \nMore information\nFor more information about participation as team or university\, please contact Marcel Rompelman (marcel.rompelman@wetskills.com). \nFor other information about companies as potential partner\, please contact Johan Oost (johan.oost@wetskills.com). \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Call for partners\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]The SunGlacier Challenge organization is looking for partners to step in the Challenge for the coming 5 years!\nWould you as company\, university\, knowledge institute\, government and/or NGO like to step in to make this SunGlacier Challenge a success? Do you think that dew harvesting will contribute to the cocktail of water sources? Would you like to meet Young Talents? Please join the SunGlacier as partner. \nMore information\nMore information about the sponsorship requirements and other information to become potential partner\, please contact Johan Oost (johan.oost@wetskills.com). \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Event Partners\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”53810″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”53546″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”53049″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”53806″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”52246″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52334″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52243″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52318″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”52257″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52155″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52155″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52155″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””]

Floodmodels and heatstressmodels can predict vulnerable areas in the urban dense areas of cities but action has to be taken by stakeholders. How can we improve the engagement of stakeholders? In this wetskills international knowledge exchange tools will be applied to evoke immediate action towards climate change. \n \nCase 2: Ecological rehabilitation of the old riverbed of Baseu river between Stefanesti-Romanesti villages \nCase owner: Rijnland Water Authority and Prut-Barlad Water Basin Administration \nThe Baseu river catchment area in the north eastern part of Romania frequently has a non-permanent flow\, which lead to major changes in the hydrological and ecological regime. This resulted in the loss of specific wetland flora and fauna habitats in the area of the Old Baseu. The team is challenged to come up with designs for the Old Baseu\, that will lead to a permanent water flow\, taking into consideration agriculture\, tourism\, drinking water access\, flood safety\, landscape and ecosystem improvement and communication and involvement of stakeholders. \nCase 3: Business-wise training \nCase owner: World Water Academy \ninformation will be provided in a later stage \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case 4:  \nCase owner: \ninformation will be provided in a later stage \nCase 5:  \nCase owner:  \ninformation will be provided in a later stage \nPrevious events in Romania\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”52439\,52424\,52422\,52423″ column_number=”5″ grayscale=”no” hover_icon=”none” images_space=”gallery_with_space”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Event Partners\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”52431″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52434″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52433″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52257″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”52334″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52512″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52513″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52155″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”52244″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52184″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52155″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52155″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””]Join this Wetskills event!\n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][no_button icon_pack=”” target=”_self” font_weight=”” text=”Register” link=”/wetskills-romania-2017-registration/” hover_border_color=”#ffffff” border_width=”2″ border_color=”#ffffff” margin=”0% 0% 0% 40%”]

SUMMARY:Wetskills-Iran 2016
DESCRIPTION:About The Event\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Tehran-Iran\, Minister of Environment and Infrastructure of Kingdom of The Netherlands\, Ms. Schultz van Haegen announced and awarded the winning team of Wetskills-Iran. The Wetskills jury found that returning a flamingo to Lake Urmia to raise awareness on all kinds of levels in society (from primary schools to farmers to municipalities) was the idea worth awarding. The awards were given at the trade dinner for the Dutch mission to Iran headed by Ms. Schultz van Haegen. \nFollowing two weeks of hard work\, cooperation and fun\, the fice Wetskills teams presented their pitches and posters of this Wetskills Water Challenge in Iran on Sunday 24th October. The ideas pitched were vastly ranging from technical solutions to give more time in adapting lifestyle for Rafsajan pistachio farmers to integrating sensor technology to create awareness by installing a large flamingo in Lake Urmia\, reacting to water level\, to entice inhabitants to a race to fill up the lake. A nice new introduction of rice farming in combination with dredging was given as solution for silting up of Anzali port and peach juice production as alternative livelihoods for the Hashgerd plain included a good sense of community work and regional economy development. Missing links were noticed in society and technology for the case of clean drinking water and by closing the gaps a solution was found. \nBetween 15 and 25 October\, the first Iranian Wetskills Challenge took place in Iran. During the event in Tehran\, 25 students and young professionals from Iran and The Netherlands worked together in teams to come up with out-of-the-box concepts for actual water related cases\, posed by Iranian and Dutch case owners. The event was aligned to the trade mission of Minister of Infrastructure & Environment of The Netherlands\, Ms. Schultz van Haegen to Iran. The Sharif University of Technology Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran are joinly hosting the event. \n  \nPress-release no1 Wetskills to Iran \nMedia Advisory-about Wetskills-Iran 2016 \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][no_blockquote text=”‘Participating in a Wetskills Water Challenge was a great experience. Though technically and economically water re-use provides excellent opportunities\, the cultural and religious resistance against bringing back treated waste water in the drinking water cycle is considerable. However\, there is plenty of opportunity to re-use water outside applications that directly or indirectly involve human consumption (e.g. landscaping\, cooling\, industrial use). How can the amount of water increased that is re-used safely and disinfected? \nCase 2: Resilient water management with stakeholders in Rafsanjan\nCase owner: ITC-University of Twente \nRafsanjan\, the main producer of pistachio in Iran\, is a sample of human settlements coping with severe water scarcity and its associated socio-economic problems. Beside the engineering solutions we need to make the socio-ecological systems more resilient in water scarce situation. The assessment of different policy options in this hazardous situation is a new challenge. \nCase 3: Finding unconventional Water Sources\n\nCase owner: Lake Urmia Restoration Programme \nLake Uremia is a lake with salt water. The shrinking of the lake results in soil challenges for the agriculture. The Wetskills Team that will work on this project might find solutions related to cloud seeding\, preventing salt dispersion or changing the economic ratio and thus finding another way of life for the region. \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Poster with results \n[vc_single_image image=”52388″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” img_link_target=”_blank” qode_css_animation=””]Poster with results \n[vc_single_image image=”52389″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” img_link_target=”_blank” qode_css_animation=””]Poster with results \n[vc_single_image image=”52390″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” img_link_target=”_blank” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case 4: Improving the irrigation water-efficiency in Hashtgerd Plain\n\nCase owner: Dutch Water Authorities / De Dommel \nA substantial increase in the rate of industrialization\, agricultural activities and urbanization in Hashtgerd Plain\, results in a dramatic  increase of water consumption. Consequently\, appropriate water resources management is essential. \nThe proposed result-oriented methodology (SSBK)\, tries to avoid impulsive actions by identifying existing bottlenecks and postponing thinking in solutions. \nCase 5: Cleaning the sediments of Anzali Port\nCase owner: Van Oord \nAnzali Port is located in the north of Iran at the Caspian Sea. The port is situated at the famous Anzali lagoon. Due to the sediments and tons of household\, industrial and hospital waste entering the lagoon each year\, the lagoon has gone from a nine-metre depth in 1975 to just one metre. \nHow can the sediments from the lagoon to the Anzali port be reduced in the short and long term. \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Poster with results \n[vc_single_image image=”52391″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” img_link_target=”_blank” qode_css_animation=””]Poster with results \n[vc_single_image image=”52392″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” img_link_target=”_blank” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”52115\,52116\,52117\,52112\,52111″ column_number=”5″ grayscale=”no” hover_icon=”none” images_space=”gallery_with_space”]Event Partners\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”52140″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52317″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52141″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52315″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”52175″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52240″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52239″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52245″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”52318″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52148″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52246″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52257″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”52247″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52146″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52243″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52155″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””]

After the successful event in 2013\, Wetskills was invited by the Politehnica to hold a new event. 18 students from Romanian and Dutch universities participated in the two-weeks programme. The programme started in Constanta with the teambuilding trip to wastewater treatment plant and a construction site of Van Oord’s project aimed at preventing further costal erosion. The Wetskills final presentations and awarding ceremony were held during the ExpoApa (17 June). \nRomanian Water Association and the Technical University of Civil Engineering became part of the consortium. The Netherlands Embassy in Romania was supporting this event. \n‘Scrap the sand – Save the land’ was the winning concept of the Flood Guards team\, consisting of: Niels Oostveen (Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences)\, Laura Alexandra Stănescu (Politehnica University Bucharest)\, Geanina-Franca Băcăoanu (Technical University for Civil Engineering in Bucharest) & Peter de Jong (Utrecht University). De winning concept was about the application and implementation of temporary embankments in the Danube Delta area. The case owner was the Valorisation Programme Delta Technology and Water. \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][no_blockquote text=”‘To be honest .. I had a “get in\, do your job\, get out” mentality. I never expected I’d grow so fond of all these wonderful people\, and in such a short amount of time. ..
