DESCRIPTION:About The Event\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]For the fifth time to Romania!\nWetskills Foundation and partners organized the Wetskills Challenge for the fifth time in Bucharest\, Romania. This Wetskills edition in Romania was hosted by the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest. Other main partners of this event were the Politehnica University of Bucharest and Technical University for Civil Engineering in Bucharest\, the Romanian Water Association\, Apele Romane and the Embassy of The Kingdom of The Netherlands. \nRomania has a very diverse landscape and water system\, with high mountains and the largest Delta of the European Union: Danube Delta. Romania faces challenges in water and wastewater\, in both large urban areas as well as remote rural villages\, and has a large water management experience of dealing with floods and droughts. And the country itself is inspiring and various: From the booming big Bucharest with its historic buildings and churches\, immens large People’s Parliament and the Old City with bars\, pubs as heart of the City to idillic smaller cities and villages in epic Transylvania and more low and dry Wallachia (border to Bulgaria) and the Europe’s largest bioreserve Danube Delta. \nThis edition of Wetskills started on 11 September 2021\, and was taking place in and around to the great city of Bucharest. During the 2-weeks program the participants worked in international\, multidisciplinary teams on real-life water cases. The ambition is to become the fourth most circular city of the Netherlands. To achieve this goal\, reducing waste streams is required\, and specially in neighborhoods with blocks of flats this is a challenge. Currently\, households have the option of separating plastic\, paper and residual waste. Residual waste is where the problem arises because it includes many streams that are bundled together as one\, including organic waste. Due to climate change\, both countries are becoming more vulnerable for heavy rainfall. RBA Siret in the Northeastern part of Romania is facing severe flash flood challenges. Especially farmers and inhabitants of small villages suffer. The team is asked to create an ‘Inspiration guide’ to showcase innovative and economic attractive measures against flash floods. This should create more awareness and indicate concrete solutions for all stakeholders in a pilot area. Yes\, it is! When we consume a product that was produced in a different country or place\, we also virtually consume the water used to produce it. This is what we call ’embedded’ or ‘virtual’ water. When products are traded across the globe\, there is also a trade in virtual water taking place. The Water Footprint\, a method that determines the freshwater use in production processes\, is an excellent tool to provide insights in the virtual water flows between continents\, countries and/or river basins. DESCRIPTION:About The Event\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Wetskills Water Challenge at AIWW 2019!\nWetskills organized a great Wetskills Water Challenge in Amsterdam\, linked to the Amsterdam International Water Week AIWW 2019. The Challenge started on October 25\, with the finals on November 7 as part of the AIWW program. \nTeams of students and young water professionals – 26 participants from 12 different countries – were working on real life water cases in a exciting two-week programme. Their main challenge: to think out-of-the-box and develop innovative\, realistic concepts. All participants also joined the AIWW Future Water Leaders Program. \nThe teams presented their ideas with a two minute pitch\, Q&A and a poster\, and the winning team was awarded by the jury during the AIWW Closing Ceremony: ‘And the winner… is Team 3\, with their plan for sustainable agriculture in peatlands. Congratulations!’ \n"It has indeed been a fruitful\, joyous and amazing time as the 26 participants spend two weeks enjoying each others company\, learning\,exploring and finding ways to work as a team together and solve six pressured\, difficult cases. But citizens and municipalities do not always take their role. How can these parties be brought into an active position for co-creation\, so that they can make their own contribution for a climate-proof environment? What is needed to strengthen the responsibilities of citizens and municipalities? \nFinal Poster \n\nTeam 1: Driving Sustainability Forward – If climate can change\, we need U to change 2\n\n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”56950″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””]Case 2: Sustainable water and sanitation services for school children in Ghana\nCase owner: VEI\, WaterWorX & Ghana Water Company Limited \nOf all schools in low-income countries\, only 51% have access to adequate water sources and only 45% have adequate sanitation facilities\, according to UNICEF\, while WASH facilities and hygiene education in schools contribute to inclusion\, dignity and equity. In Ghana\, the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) wants to ensure that an additional 19 schools are provided with adequate water and sanitation services. Funds are available\, intentions are there; the question is: how can GWCL (in partnership with VEI and the WaterWorx program) ensure sustainable water and sanitation for the school children in their service area? \nFinal Poster \n\nTeam 2: Creating a safe place in an unsafe world – by uniting communities through waste\n\n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”56952″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””]Case 3: Effective water management in a pressure drain dominated peatland\nCase owner: Water Authority Drents Overijsselse Delta \nPressure drains might be an effective solution to mitigate land subsidence in peatlands\, as they can increase the ground water table in summer and lower it in winter time\, thereby reducing the oxidation rate of the peat soil. However\, it implies that the ground water table can be managed at a finer scale than is common at present. Water requirements may rise\, the timing of water needs may change\, and the farm landscape might become more diversified. The communities are heavily affected by declining water quality\, with pollution causing health issues and impacting fisheries and agriculture. Existing initiatives for community-based environmental monitoring typically focus on generating data for authorities and science\, and rural water supply schemes typically focus on water quantity. This case focuses on rethinking the chain for biomass (wet) residual flows\, f.e. rest products of tomatoes\, in the Westland hortisector. The aim is to create value and a new purpose for upscaled products. How can we make changes\, in early stages of the production chain\, to create an optimal result? What kind of technical solutions could be viable? It affects the food supply of communities in Western Zambia that could historically rely on subsistence farming. Improving water supply though boreholes provides short-term relief\, but is not a long-term solution. How to create an approach for water challenges in subsistence farming communities? Romania faces challenges in water and wastewater\, in both large urban areas as well as remote rural villages\, and has a large water management experience of dealing with floods and droughts. \nAnd the country itself is inspiring and various: From the booming big Bucharest with its historic buildings and churches\, immens large People’s Parliament and the Old City with bars\, pubs as heart of the City to idillic smaller cities and villages in epic Transylvania and more low and dry Wallachia (border to Bulgaria) and the Europe’s largest bioreserve Danube Delta. \nWetskills-Romania 2019 was already the fourth one in Romania\, and was aligned to the Official Opening of the Flood Proof Romania Polder (in Facau\, 40 minutes southwest of Bucharest)\, a testing facility similar to the Flood Proof Holland in Delft. \nThe 2019 event’s theme was about ‘testing and implementing smart water management innovations‘\, with 3 cases: ‘Innovative Integrated Water Resource Management Plans taking into account drought and climate change’\, a ‘Market scan for temporary embankments to be used during floods’ and a plan for ‘Keeping Buzau river waste free & attractive for eco-tourism’. \nThe final presentations were organized at the Brigaid Conference (13 June 2019) and the winning team was announced during the Opening of the Flood Proof Romania Polder. \nThis fourth Wetskills edition in Romania was hosted by the Technical University for Civil Engineering in Bucharest. DESCRIPTION:About The Event\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Wetskills goes for the third time to Romania! \nThe Wetskills Foundation and its partners invites Bachelor (final stage)\, Master\, PhD students and recent graduates to apply for the Wetskills Water Challenge programme in Bucharest – Romania. This third Wetskills edition in Romania will be hosted by Politehnica University of Bucharest\, partnered by Technical University for Civil Engineering in Bucharest\, Romanian Water Association and Wetskills Foundation. The final presentations and awarding will be organized during the ExpoApa\, the largest Water Technology Conference and Exhibition of Eastern Europe\, combined with the Danube Regional Water Forum Eastern Europe 2017\, see: www.araexpoapa.ro.  \nApply for this great opportunity to participate in one of the Wetskills Water Challenges! \nWe are looking for students and Young Professionals from universities and organisations from Europe and abroad with a passion for water: Apply for Wetskills-Romania 2017 (period: 4-18 May 2017). \nDeadline early bird: 15 January 2017\nFirst selection deadline: 15 February\nSecond selection deadline: 28 February\nFinal Deadline: 15 March\nThe early bird participation fee (till 15 January) for participants is 250\,- euros and the normal rate is 275\,- euros. This participation fee includes accommodation in Bucharest\, teambuilding weekend activities\, some lunches & dinners\, field trip\, workshop\, conference entrance fees and working locations. Participants are responsible for their own travel expenses (plane tickets\, local travel\, etcetera)\, meals during working days and other personal costs. some meals\, programme\, supervision\, field trips. \nFor participants from the Politehnica University of Bucharest and Technical University for Civil Engineering in Bucharest pay € 50\,- and this does not include accommodation. Their participation will be organized by their own institutes. Students from other Romanian universities or organizations are also welcome to register (contact Laura Stanescu\, see below). \nDuring past editions participants often successfully arranged financial compensation for their Wetskills participation from their university or employer. Floodmodels and heatstressmodels can predict vulnerable areas in the urban dense areas of cities but action has to be taken by stakeholders. How can we improve the engagement of stakeholders? In this wetskills international knowledge exchange tools will be applied to evoke immediate action towards climate change. \n \nCase 2: Ecological rehabilitation of the old riverbed of Baseu river between Stefanesti-Romanesti villages \nCase owner: Rijnland Water Authority and Prut-Barlad Water Basin Administration \nThe Baseu river catchment area in the north eastern part of Romania frequently has a non-permanent flow\, which lead to major changes in the hydrological and ecological regime. This resulted in the loss of specific wetland flora and fauna habitats in the area of the Old Baseu.
