SUMMARY:Wetskills-Oman 2025
DESCRIPTION:About The Event\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]6th Wetskills in Oman: for the first time in Salalah (south Oman)!\nBecause of the great successes of previous Wetskills Challenges in Oman (5 events since 2012 up to 2024) we are thrilled to organize the sixth event. And for the first time in the green part of Oman: Salalah! When the temperatures are high in Muscat\, this southern region is a great place to visit in August! \nWe got 4 cases from Omani partners and had 19 participants on board. The Wetskills Finals and Awarding Ceremony were held on 10 September. This was a unique chance to present our solutions for a water smart society and engage with others. This lost opportunity is significant\, as capturing Khareef rainwater could reduce reliance on overdrawn groundwater and costly desalination. As millions of cubic meters are wasted annually\, issues like flooding\, groundwater depletion\, and rising salinity are intensifying. Climate changes is also leading to more intense rainfall during the Khareef and unpredictable weather patterns throguhout the year. There is an urgent need for integrated\, scalable\, holistic and sustainable approaches to rainfall harvesting\, in the region and across Oman\, to tap this resource and address water security challenges. \nCase 2: Monitoring water quality in distribution networks using AI\n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case owner: Nama Water (Muscat) \nEnsuring safe drinking water is a growing challenge as treated water travels through vast and aging distribution networks. This case focuses on innovative strategies to monitor and maintain water quality across Oman’s water supply systems. Participants will explore how real-time sensors\, smart monitoring tools\, and AI-based analytics can improve water safety\, detect contamination risks early\, and support faster response actions. The case also addresses practical constraints such as infrastructure limitations\, budget\, and workforce capacity. Participants will develop integrated\, scalable solutions to help utilities maintain high-quality water from source to tap. \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Pitch & Poster – Winning team! \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”64768″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” img_link_target=”_blank” css=””]Pitch & Poster \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”64770″ img_size=”full” style=”vc_box_outline” onclick=”img_link_large” img_link_target=”_blank” css=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case 3: Strategic review of atmospheric water harvesting technologies\n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case owner: MEDRC \nOman\, characterized by arid and semi-arid climatic conditions\, faces persistent challenges related to freshwater scarcity. Despite limited rainfall and high evaporation rates\, many regions—particularly along the coastal areas—experience relatively high humidity levels\, especially during the summer months. This atmospheric moisture presents a largely untapped opportunity for sustainable water generation through Atmospheric Water Harvesting (AWH) technologies. By leveraging Oman’s unique climatic profile\, particularly in humid zones such as Dhofar and the Al Batinah coast\, AWH systems offer a promising supplementary water source that can support water security\, especially in remote or water-stressed communities. \nCase 4: Solving Persistent Sulphide Contamination in Drinking Water\n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case owner: Nama Dhofar \nSupplying safe and clean drinking water is one of the most pressing challenges in Salalah\, where groundwater and desalination plants form a vital part of the city’s water system. Nama Dhofar brings forward a key issue for innovation: the persistent presence of hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) in raw water. Despite reverse osmosis (RO) treatment\, residual sulphide levels remain around 0.8 mg/L\, leading to a “rotten egg” odor and repeated non-compliance with drinking water standards. How can Nama Dhofar rethink and improve RO technology or propose alternative treatment steps that can fully eliminate H₂S\, ensuring odor-free\, safe\, and reliable drinking water for the community? \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Pich & Poster \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”64772″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” img_link_target=”_blank” css=””]Pich & Poster \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”64774″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” img_link_target=”_blank” css=””]Event Partners\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”53806″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”64676″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”62807″ img_size=”220×125″ css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”64675″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”53546″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”53049″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”57060″ img_size=”220×125″ css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52334″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””]Previous Events in Oman\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”61494\,61498\,61541\,61542\,61545\,61543″ img_size=”medium” column_number=”4″ grayscale=”no” hover_icon=”none” images_space=”gallery_with_space”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]

Yet until the early 20th century\, it was a true ‘water city’\, defined by a network of canals. With the growing number of automobiles\, many of these historic waterways were transformed into roads. Now\, the city council is ready to turn back the clock and revive Rotterdam’s water heritage: Transforming roads into canals. You are invited to re-imagine this transformation. How can we create space for new surface water in a city where every square meter counts? \nCase 2: Conceptualizing AI-Driven Wastewater Treatment\nCase owner: Dept of Water & Sanitation (South Africa) \nIn an era of rapid technological advancement\, artificial intelligence (AI) offers a transformative opportunity to enhance wastewater treatment by learning from existing knowledge and continuously improving the system over time. This project requires participants to conceptualize an AI-driven wastewater treatment system\, that can self-optimize by learning from scientific literature and adapting treatment processes or microbial compositions to improve performance. The team will focus on designing a theoretical framework\, identifying key principles of AI\, and exploring how AI can enhance wastewater treatment. \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Pitch & Poster \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”64354″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” img_link_target=”_blank” css=””]Pitch & Poster – winning team! \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”64355″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” img_link_target=”_blank” css=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case 3: Restoring the Listeava wetland\nCase owner: Blue Deal Romania \nThis project aims to restore the Listeava wetland on the Jiet and Dunbe Rivers\, with a rehabilitation of natural habitats\, enhancing biodiversity\, and improving water quality\, while also fostering ecological resilience. By assessing water footprints\, companies in the region can contribute to wetland improvement efforts. How can Apele Romane develop a collaborative model to engage companies with water usage impacts in specific regions in Romania\, encouraging (co-)investment in sustainable water management initiatives to ensure equitable and efficient water resource allocation? \nCase 4: Supply chain Biobased construction materials\nCase owner: Waternet (The Netherlands) \nBiobased products can support the circular supply chain. This case focuses on 2 biomass-sources for biobased products. In the region managed by Waternet\, alternative crops like cattail and reed grow well in wet peatlands. Besides\, Waternet creates amounts of reed-residues by mowing water bank edges. The circular supply chain for these materials is not fully active yet\, the next steps involve developing a business model and roadmap for sustainable biobased products. How can this business model be created and implemented\, while considering that farmers need an incentive to grow specific crops? \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Pitch & Poster \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”64356″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” img_link_target=”_blank” css=””]Pitch & Poster \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”64357″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” img_link_target=”_blank” css=””]Event Partners\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”52373″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”53563″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”58343″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”54957″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”57038″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”64249″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”55054″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”57211″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”64175″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”64177″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”54106″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”63239″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””]Previous Wetskills events in The Netherlands\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]

PDAM Semarang is committed to expanding and improving its water supply infrastructure to ensure comprehensive city coverage\, aiming to transition residents from groundwater to more sustainable PDAM water options. This initiative is part of PDAM Tirta Moedal’s vision to deliver 4K aspects (Quality\, Quantity\, Continuity\, and Affordability) in areas with established networks. What are the main challenges for PDAM? and how can they effectively and innovatively manage this transition for the community? with the aim of reducing private groundwater use and thereby decrease land subsidence. \nCase 2: Opportunities for Water Footprint Compensation \nCase owner: FoxallMunro \n\nGlobal water resources are under pressure. Regulatory and restorative actions on the local or watershed level are needed to prevent further pressure. To respond to this need we intend to build upon the link between water consumption for production to water compensation activities. As a progression from the 2023 Cape Town pilot water compensation project to determine the feasibility of community capacity building in water management as a water footprint compensation activity\, and the subsequent publishing of the water footprint compensation framework at the NY UN Water Summit\, this case intends to be the next step in building up a portfolio of global water compensation projects for organisations to invest in\, once they have calculated\, addressed and reduced their footprints as much as possible. \n\nCase 3: Practising Eco Theology in Pesantren through Water and Waste Management \nCase owners: Percik & Universitas Sebelas Maret \nIslam contributes significantly to environmental conservation through its teachings and principles. Despite this\, many Islamic communities\, especially in Indonesia\, face challenges with waste generation and water usage. Each person wastes 0.68 kg of waste daily\, and Muslims require 1.5 liters of water for prayer preparation. This case seeks to delve into these challenges\, particularly in Islamic institutions like boarding schools\, and understand leaders’ perspectives on water availability. The objective is to address current environmental issues and to find solutions while considering practical aspects of eco-theology. \nPrevious Wetskills events\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”901\,51988\,53474\,53618\,53747″ column_number=”5″ grayscale=”no” hover_icon=”none” images_space=”gallery_with_space”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Event Partners\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”54042″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”54040″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”56309″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”63207″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”63209″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”54043″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”63206″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52373″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”54106″ img_size=”220×220″ alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”63210″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52334″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”57038″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”54101″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””]

The team worked on a case of case owner Water Research Commission. They came up with a new model to strengthen regional cooperation in the SADC region and enhance economic development using the water-energy-food (WEF) nexus. \nEvent Cases\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case 1: Strengthening Cooperation and Capacity Development in SADC through WEF-Nexus\nCase owner: Water Research Commission \nThe SADC region (Southern African Development Community) is home to about 90 million people\, of which over 60% live in rural areas depending on agriculture\, only 61% have access to safe drinking water\, 39% to adequate sanitation\, and 24% of the total population and 5% of rural people having access to electricity. Although the region is endowed with abundant water\, agricultural\, and energy resources\, the distribution is uneven\, and exploitation and access are unequal\, resulting in perpetual poverty and resource insecurity. The region receives about 2\,300 km³ of renewable water resources annually\, yet only 14% is retained for use. Of this retained water\, 18% is used for domestic purposes and the rest for agriculture and industry. How can new pathways strengthen regional cooperation and enhance economic development without leaving anyone using the water-energy-food (WEF) nexus. \nCase 2: Community Capacity Development for Water Footprint Compensation\nCase owner: 11th Hour Racing Team\, Environmental Monitoring Group (EMG)\, Water Footprint Implementation (WFI) \nGlobal water resources are under pressure. Regulatory and restorative actions on the local or river basin level are needed to prevent further pressure. To respond to this need\, we intend to link water consumption for production to water compensation activities. The 11th Hour Racing Team\, EMG\, and WFI are working together in an EMG-led pilot project to determine the feasibility of community capacity building in water management as a water footprint compensation activity. How does the EMG pilot project serve as a blueprint for other community capacity-building wetland restoration projects in developing Water Footprint Compensation? \nCase 3: Solid Waste Management in Informal Settlements\nCase owner: Blue Deal South Africa \nWater is life. And this resource is under threat. Pollution due to solid waste is one of the causes. Dumping of waste alongside rivers and stream deteriorates the water quality. When discharged into sewers\, it clogs manholes and leads to overflow of the sewers. Especially in informal settlements\, due to a lack of infrastructure solid waste management is a huge task for the local municipalities. How can solid waste management be properly and sustainably be implemented in informal settlements considering the social-economic situation? \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case 4: Sustainable Sludge Management at Rand Water Panfontein Sludge Treatment Plant \nCase owner: Rand Water \nRand Water\, the largest water utility in Africa is currently facing challenges with handling dewatered sludge – a of the by-product from its water treatment process – at its Panfontein Treatment Plant. The plant currently produces 600 tonnes of sludge per day and us quickly running out of storage place. This causes several logistical and environmental concerns. How can Rand Water optimize the sludge dewatering process and reduce the sludge time drying time to\, inter alia\, minimize the volume of sludge produced\, shorten the sludge drying time and thus reduce the cost of the process. \nCase 5: Empowering an Alumni Community for Action-driven follow-up of great ideas\nCase owner: Young Water Professionals South Africa & Wetskills Foundation \n‘Stop Talking\, Start Doing’.  That was the theme of the YWP Conference in South Africa in 2015. ‘A little Less Conversation\, A little More Action’ was the theme of the Young Water Professionals Programme of Amsterdam International Water Week 2013. Young Water Professionals South Africa and Wetskills are youth programmes which have been uniting talent for more than a decade. A lot of co-creation (like Wetskills ideas) and community building have been established in South Africa and beyond. How can WISA-YWP and Wetskills accelerate follow-up activities of fresh (WetsNext) ideas with the combined Water Talent Community in South Africa of the last decade? \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”61516\,61512″ img_size=”medium” column_number=”5″ grayscale=”no” hover_icon=”none” images_space=”gallery_with_space”]Wetskills-South Africa – some previous events\n\n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]South African Alumni about Wetskills\nEvent Partners\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”53563″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”61429″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”53560″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”53564″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”61385″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”61396″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”57645″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52242″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”61428″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”61424″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”54106″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”57060″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”54325″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”54326″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”61430″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52334″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]

Since 2012 the WRC R&D Branch has organized various activities under the banner of the WEF Lighthouse. The concept offers an opportunity for stakeholders\, to promote cross-sectoral\, systematic and integrated management of resources\, and address synergies and trade-offs in the WEF nexus. \nCase 2: Creating more benefits from Assessments\nCase owner: Blue Deal Programme \nSeveral assessments are performed to establish the performance of water and sanitation services\, like the Green Drop and Blue Drop Assessments on the performance\, compliance and efficiency of wastewater and water treatment works (WWTW’s and WTW’s)\, and the  Municipal Structural Self-Assessments (MuSSA). The Blue Deal South Africa Partnership aims to improve the performance of WWTW’s in several municipalities\, and disseminate the lessons learnt to other municipalities. How can the Green Drop Assessments and MuSSA-Assessments be used for a model-based replication of the Blue Deal results? \nCase 3: Empowering water professionals: the importance of training and lifelong learning \nCase owner: World Water Academy \nMunicipalities are faced with many challenges of water supply\, wastewater and urban water management.  Municipalities seem to rely more and more on administrators and finance managers\, but water engineers and operators are of great importance when it comes to critical water and wastewater management and maintenance issues. How could lifelong learning and practical training of water professionals empower engineers\, operators and managers to help improve SA’s water quality? \nPitch & Poster \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”60048″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” img_link_target=”_blank” qode_css_animation=””]Pitch & Poster \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”60047″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” img_link_target=”_blank” qode_css_animation=””]Pitch & Poster \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”60046″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” img_link_target=”_blank” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case 4: How to diminish the impact of solid waste on water?\nCase owner: Blue Deal Programme \nSolid waste is becoming a growing problem\, also for water. Dumping waste alongside rivers and streams deteriorates the water quality. When discharged into sewers\, it clogs manholes and leads to overflow of the sewers. Especially in informal settlements\, solid waste management becomes a huge task for local municipalities. Are there innovative ideas to persuade communities not to throw their trash ‘over the fence’? How could more environmental awareness within the communities be created and sustained? \nCase 5: Indigenous Knowledge Systems to Respond to Water Vector Diseases\n\nCase owner: Water Research Commission\n \nClimate change is leading to changing weather patterns\, which will most likely effect the occurrence and distribution of a number of water vector diseases. This might change non-endemic areas into endemic areas\, and thereby putting communities at risk. How could medicinal plants and other indigenous knowledge systems in communities be used and stimulated\, in order for communities to better adapt and cope with climate change and reduce their vulnerability to water vector diseases? \nCase 6: Safe Stormwater Use for communities near Roodeplaat Dam\nCase owner: Department of Water and Sanitation\n \nStormwater runoff is often lost into the water drainage system without being filtered\, thereby polluting surface water resources with debris. Roodeplaat Dam is an example of such a water resource\, currently polluted by debris from stormwater drainage from influent rivers. At the same time\, water availability is a challenge in South Africa\, and rainfall is more irregular by changing weather patterns. How could the Department of Water and Sanitation use the stormwater runoff as part of the current water system\, without decreasing water quality of the dam\, to increase water supply to communities? \nPitch & Poster \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”60045″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” img_link_target=”_blank” qode_css_animation=””]Pitch & Poster \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”60044″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” img_link_target=”_blank” qode_css_animation=””]Pitch & Poster \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”60043″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” img_link_target=”_blank” qode_css_animation=””]Watch the event video!\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]The 2018 Programme\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Event Partners\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”53563″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52242″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”57038″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52334″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”52240″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”57645″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”61395″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”61388″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”61390″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”61391″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”56312″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”61392″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]

SUMMARY:Wetskills-United Arab Emirates 2022
DESCRIPTION:About The Event\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]United Arab Emirates 2022: from WorldExpo Shanghai to Dubai!\nWetskills Foundation and partners organized another great water challenge event: in Dubai\, United Arab Emirates. \nIn a hybrid format (online with some in-person activities) participants from various countries (UAE\, The Netherlands\, Colombia\, India\, Nigeria\, Germany) worked together in teams with each its own challenge. The cases are provided by our partners UAE University\, RVO\, PureBlue Water and Witteveen+Bos\, in close cooperation with the Dutch Dubai programme of The Netherlands government. \nDuring the Finals on Sunday 16 January\, the teams presented the results to an international jury in The Netherlands Pavilion of the Dubai 2020 World Expo. This hybrid event was also the final part of the Wetskills 10 years Jubilee Celebrations. \n[vc_single_image image=”59143″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Wetskills once started at the Shanghai WorldExpo 2010\, so Wetskills ‘bridged’ the two WorldExpos and looked back to the results of many Wetskills events in many countries. \nThe Jury announced Team Falaj 2.0 as the winning team\, with their innovative but applicable concept to improve water management on small farm. ‘Most UAE small farms use groundwater for crop irrigation. Low groundwater levels and salinization are a growing problem\, and various water management strategies have already been proposed. The Wetskills team came up with a Tool to support farmers in identifying which strategy is most feasible for their own farm.’ This case was formulated by UAE University\, to focus on a very challenging problem. \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”59206″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””]Read the article in Gulf Today: ‘Dutch PM Mark Rutte dubs UAE as living hub of innovative business‘ with a part about Wetskills-United Arab Emirates 2022; Water reuse is one of the opportunities to mitigate the water stress in those cities. PureBlue’s decentral wastewater treatment units treat up until natural water quality and beyond. The goal is to enforce blue networks\, the concatenation of water bodies and infrastructure\, to let green networks\, like parks\, nature reserves and oases grow. PureBlue looks for creative implementation of their units in UAE cities to bring fresh water to locations that will benefit most from it. In addition\, social innovation is of large importance to convince people of the safety and environmental friendliness of treated wastewater. \nCase 2: A Sustainable Alternative to Water in Plastic\nCase owner: RVO.nl \nOn a regular day millions of people encounter one or more single use plastic water bottle. It is just a normal routine but the effect that it has on our planet is devastating to the entire ecosystem. A plastic bottle does not simply disappear once we recycle it or throw it away\, it is not biodegradable and becomes land and ocean litter. Organizations that go through a particularly high volume of plastic bottles consumption are University Campuses with vending machines and cafeteria and Hotels with plastic bottles distributed in each guest room. How can the use of “hydration stations” within these institutions be the solution to drastically reduce the impact that single use plastic has on the environment? \nPitch & Poster \n[vc_single_image image=”59230″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” qode_css_animation=””]Pitch & Poster \n[vc_single_image image=”59229″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space height=”64px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case 3: Decision-making tool for water management at small farms in UAE\nCase owner: United Arab Emirates University  \nPrivately owned farms of a size between two and six ha are very common in the UAE\, and mostly rely on groundwater for crop irrigation. In recent years the productivity of many of these farms has been threatened by increasing groundwater depletion and salinization. Various management strategies have been proposed to slow down groundwater deterioration and/or sustain agricultural production under increasing salinity. tools to facilitate such water management decision making are so far not available. It will maximize revenues at the farm level\, and/or create an overall long-term sustainability and environmental safety. How could a tool support an individual farmer or decision identifying of the most feasible water management strategy for UAE’s small farms? \nCase 4: Circular carbon zero water and resources recovery plant\nCase owner: Witteveen+Bos (The Netherlands) \nThe global water sector contributes about 5% of greenhouse gas (GHG)\, and this is calculated without the process-related emissions of CH4\, CO2 and N2O due to biological used water treatment. The UWTP’s are getting more efficient every day and water loops are being closed in municipal and industrial settings. However\, by improving removal performances the carbon emissions rise by energy demand\, chemical use\, and process emission. Improving water quality leads to increasing CO2 emissions. The Water and Resources Refinery\, developed by Witteveen+Bos and partners leads to a circular zero carbon used water treatment. How can the Water and Resources Refinery also solve these challenges for the United Arab Emirates and Singapore creating a future-proof and climate resilient water sector? \nPitch & Poster \n[vc_single_image image=”59228″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” qode_css_animation=””]Pitch & Poster \n[vc_single_image image=”59227″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Event Partners\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”57038″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”58274″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”53049″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52334″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”59130″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”56310″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”59129″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”57060″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”53877″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”54075″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”58278″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52246″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Movie of Wetskills-Oman 2019\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Finals of Wetskills-Oman 2020\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Join this Wetskills event!

The mission of the Duzi-uMngeni Conservation Trust (DUCT) is to empower local citizens to be champions of the environment (Enviro-Champs) in their local community. Through a green livelihoods programme\, people living adjacent to rivers are given the responsibility to adopt-a-stretch – cleaning\, maintaining\, greening\, restoring\, and undertaking citizen science monitoring on that section of the river. The challenge that DUCT now faces is how to create a (financially) sustainable business model for the activities. Government\, private\, and civil society partners all have something to give\, and value to gain from being involved. How do we bring this together in a long-term sustainable ‘win-win’ way? \nCase 2: LookSeeDo: Virtual Reality experience for capacitating staff\nCase owner: JumpLoom & Blue Deal South Africa (project Crocodile River) \n\n\n\nSouth Africa is facing an immediate water crisis caused\, by amongst others\, insufficient water infrastructure maintenance\, a lack of investment and inadequate technical skills. Many WWTWs are failing to comply with their stipulated license conditions\, are not “Green Drop certified” as required by the Department of Water and Sanitation\, and at least 30% are at a high risk of failure. One of the key challenges is the lack of ongoing regular and appropriate WWTW staff training. Virtual reality (VR)\, as training and education method\, could bring new opportunities for (cost)effective training provision. Could JumpLoom become a sustainable value-add given the current technical skills challenges in the South African Wastewater sector? \n\n\n\nCase 3: Swamp-friendly Water Hyacinth harvesting\nCase owner: Blue Deal South Africa (project Vaal River) \nThe Vaal river is known for its poor water quality. The Blesbokspruit wetland (BBS)\, located in the Upper Vaal catchment\, is one of the 26 RAMSAR sites in South Africa. The BSS is close to losing its status due to threats of pollution resulting in low water quality. One of the main challenges is the invasive alien species like the water hyacinth\, which is well-known for its fast growing and destructive attitude. The water hyacinth is also a useful plant for improving water quality and purposes as energy production\, water purification and building materials. The main question for the BBS: How can the water hyacinth be prevented spreading or collected in a sustainable and self-supportive way. \nPrevious events in South Africa\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”51836\,51834\,51833\,51832″ column_number=”4″ grayscale=”no” hover_icon=”none” images_space=”gallery_with_space”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Event Partners\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”53563″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52242″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”57038″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52240″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”57645″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52146″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52245″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52334″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Join this Wetskills event!\n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]

SUMMARY:Wetskills-Oman 2020
DESCRIPTION:About The Event\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Third Wetskills in Oman successfully wrapped-up \nTeam Wave Integration won the third Wetskills Water Challenge in Oman. The team came up with a creative solution to kick-start a sustainable and self-supportive local Water Footprint Network in Oman and combining experience jobs for talented female graduates. The case was formulated by a consortium of Water Footprint Implementation\, Oman Water Society\, Water Footprint Network and Sultan Qaboos University. These organizations aim to establish a local network for awareness and capacity development including the implementation of the Water Footprint concept. Maartje Wadman\, Junior Soil Advisor of Antea Group in The Netherlands\, presenter of the pitch for the winning team: “Really would like to thank everyone who made this Wetskills edition still an unforgettable experience. I am sure that I will come back to Oman and that I will join another Wetskills edition.” \nCoronavirus \nThe Coronavirus (COVID-19) affected the Wetskills programme in Oman. Despite all adaptive measures\, the shortening of 2 days and the postpone of the 2nd International conference on Water Resources in Arid Areas where the Finals & Awarding Ceremony were planned\, the programme went well\, the participants were satisfied\, and the results are promising. The Wetskills supervsiors Marcel Rompelman and Ahmed Al-Busaidi (SQU) managed to complete a quality programme in Muscat. \nRead more: Press-release Wetskills-Oman 2020 \nFore more information: Johan Oost\, johan.oost@wetskills.com and/or Ahmed Al-Busaidi\, ahmed99@squ.edu.om. \n— \nThe 2020 central theme of Wetskills Events\, celebrating 10 years of Wetskills:\n‘VALUING FUTURE WATER LEADERS SHAKING THE WATER-ENERGY-FOOD COCKTAIL WITH THEIR INCLUSIVE & CATALYTIC CAPACITY’. \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Event info\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Programme Wetskills-Oman 2020 \nTerms & Conditions Wetskills-Oman 2020 \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][no_button icon_pack=”font_awesome” fa_icon=”fa-facebook” icon_position=”right” target=”_self” font_weight=”” text=”Attend on Facebook” link=”https://www.facebook.com/events/2190960907875521/” icon_color=”#ffffff”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Movie Wetskills-Oman 2019 \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Follow Wetskills\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][no_icons icon_pack=”font_elegant” fa_icon=”fa-facebook” fa_size=”fa-lg” custom_size=”30″ type=”normal” rotated_shape=”no” icon_shadow=”no” inner_border=”no” back_to_top_icon=”” link=”https://www.facebook.com/Wetskills-496271977097972″ anchor_icon=”” target=”_blank” icon_color=”#0076b2″ hover_icon_color=”#43dbbd” margin=”0px 12px 0px 0px” fe_icon=”social_facebook”]     [no_icons icon_pack=”font_elegant” fa_icon=”fa-twitter” fa_size=”fa-lg” custom_size=”30″ type=”normal” rotated_shape=”no” icon_shadow=”no” inner_border=”no” back_to_top_icon=”” link=”http://twitter.com/wetskills” anchor_icon=”” target=”_blank” icon_color=”#0076b2″ hover_icon_color=”#43dbbd” margin=”0px 12px 0px 0px” fe_icon=”social_twitter”]     [no_icons icon_pack=”font_elegant” fa_icon=”fa-instagram” fa_size=”fa-lg” custom_size=”30″ type=”normal” rotated_shape=”no” icon_shadow=”no” inner_border=”no” back_to_top_icon=”” link=”https://www.instagram.com/wetskills/” anchor_icon=”” target=”_blank” icon_color=”#0076b2″ hover_icon_color=”#43dbbd” margin=”0px 12px 0px 0px” fe_icon=”social_instagram”]     [no_icons icon_pack=”font_elegant” fa_icon=”fa-twitter” fa_size=”fa-lg” custom_size=”30″ type=”normal” rotated_shape=”no” icon_shadow=”no” inner_border=”no” back_to_top_icon=”” link=”https://www.linkedin.com/groups/2949484″ anchor_icon=”” target=”_blank” icon_color=”#0076b2″ hover_icon_color=”#43dbbd” margin=”0px 12px 0px 0px” fe_icon=”social_linkedin”]     [no_icons icon_pack=”font_elegant” fa_icon=”fa-youtube-square” fe_icon=”social_youtube” fa_size=”fa-lg” custom_size=”30″ type=”normal” rotated_shape=”no” icon_shadow=”no” inner_border=”no” back_to_top_icon=”” link=”https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJmPNM9roCkR1uvgJMHqpvA” anchor_icon=”” target=”_blank” icon_color=”#0076b2″ hover_icon_color=”#43dbbd” margin=”0px 12px 0px 0px”] \nOverview programme\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]The Finals\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Field visits to Haya Water and Nizwa\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”57289\,57290\,57291\,57292″ img_size=”medium” column_number=”4″ grayscale=”no” hover_icon=”none” images_space=”gallery_with_space”][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”57293\,57294\,57296\,57297″ img_size=”medium” column_number=”4″ grayscale=”no” hover_icon=”none” images_space=”gallery_with_space”][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”57299\,57303\,57300\,57301″ img_size=”medium” column_number=”4″ grayscale=”no” hover_icon=”none” images_space=”gallery_with_space”]Event Cases\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case 1: Turn Energy to Water and back. Creating a cross-sectoral communication\nCase owner: Water Footprint Implementation \nOman is a water-scarce country\, and energy-rich when looking at the large (fossil) energy resources. Energy in Oman is rather cheap and the main catalyst for its economy. Oman is also facing the world’s sustainability challenge of lowering the use of fossil energy and the transition to alternative energy production. But are stakeholders in Oman aware that this also affects the use of its valuable and scarce water? Various Ministries are invloved\, e.g. Water\, Energy\, but also Internal affairs and Economy. Team challenge: How could the determination of the Water Footprint of Oman’s energy-mix\, and the Carbon Footprint of Oman’s water use\, contribute to cross-sectoral communication? \nCase 2: Visual Problem Appraisal for Integrated Water Management in Oman\nCase owner: Van Hall Larenstein\n \nTo achieve the ambitions of the National Water Resource Master Plan\, it is envisioned that young Omani need to learn about Water management issues in their country. Involved institutions are exploring innovative learning strategies with a potential to stimulate water management knowledge and expertise with an interdisciplinary focus. In the search for a learning strategy that caters for an action-research orientation on water management\, Wetskills Oman is exploring the potential of a series of film-based interviews for distance learning (Visual Problem Appraisal). \nCase 3: Impact of NON-domestic wastewater\nCase owner: Haya Water \nDischarging Non-Domestic Wastewater to the sewerage system is an operational\, environmental and safety risk. This can also cause odours\, dangerous gases\, accelerated corrosion\, and sewer network blockage. It can affect the sewage treatment processes\, and adversely impact bio-solids and effluent quality. Moreover\, discharging Non-Domestic Wastewater to the sewer poses a health and safety risk to personnel working in and around the sewerage system\, due to substances in the industrial wastewater or their reactions with other substances. This Case study aims to reduce the impact\, and protect Haya Water assets from harmful disposal of Non-Domestic Wastewater into Haya Water sewage network and STP’s. \nFinal Pitch & Poster \n[vc_empty_space height=”8 px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”57382″][vc_empty_space height=”16 px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Final Pitch & Poster \n[vc_empty_space height=”8 px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”57383″][vc_empty_space height=”16 px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Final Pitch & Poster \n[vc_empty_space height=”8 px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”57384″][vc_empty_space height=”16 px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case 4: Chances for Agroforestry in Oman using treated effluent\nCase owner: Sultan Qaboos University\, department of Soil Sciences\n \nOver 15 years ago a country study was done to investigate the possibilities of forests in Oman. The study showed it is critical to integrate planted trees and forests in more holistic approaches: Agroforestry. That means\, to provide environmental services\, stimulate biodiversity benefits\, and meet people’s short and long-term needs. The creation of demonstration sites was suggested. What are the chances for Agroforestry in Oman? And in what way could treated effluent be used in Agroforestry? \nCase 5: Sustainable embedding of the Water Footprint in Oman\nCase owners: Sultan Qaboos University\, Water Footprint Implementation\, Oman Water Society & Water Footprint Network\n \nWater Footprint has the potential to become a leading concept for quantifying freshwater use in Oman. The Water Footprint Network (WFN) established worldwide several hubs\, each with a local network focusing on research\, awareness raising and capacity building about the Water Footprint concept. In 2019\, WFN and the Sultan Qaboos University discussed on the possibilities of creating a Water Footprint Hub in Oman\, in collaboration with other partners. This hub should also focus on the implementation of projects to bring the Water Footprint Theory into practice in Oman. How could the Case Owners set-up a sustainable and self-supportive Water Footprint Hub in Oman? \nFinal Pitch & Poster \n[vc_empty_space height=”8 px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”57385″][vc_empty_space height=”16 px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Final Pitch & Poster \n[vc_empty_space height=”8 px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”57386″][vc_empty_space height=”16 px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Event Partners\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”53049″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”53546″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”53806″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52334″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”55015″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”54106″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”53810″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”55011″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”56621″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52257″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52245″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52243″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””]Event Blogs\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][no_blog_list type=”boxes” image_size=”landscape” show_thumbnail=”yes” number_of_columns=”4″ overlay_icon=”1″ order_by=”date” order=”DESC” title_tag=”h5″ display_excerpt=”1″ info_position=”top” post_info_text_transform=”none” post_info_font_weight=”700″ post_info_font_style=”normal” display_category=”0″ display_date=”1″ date_place=”over_title” display_author=”0″ display_comments=”0″ display_button=”1″ icon_pack=”font_elegant” fe_icon=”arrow_right” button_icon_position=”right” number_of_posts=”9″ overlay_color=”rgba(0\,221\,207\,0.59)” category=”wetskills-oman-2020″ text_length=”160″ title_size=”28″ title_color=”#0076b2″ post_info_font_size=”20″ post_info_color=”rgba(0\,221\,207\,0.59)” post_info_font_family=”Montserrat” post_info_letter_spacing=”-0\,5″ date_size=”21″ box_info_padding=”40px 5px 5px 5px” button_text=”READ MORE” button_background_color=”rgba(0\,221\,207\,0.59)” button_hover_background_color=”#0076b2″ button_border_color=”rgba(0\,221\,207\,0.59)” button_hover_border_color=”#0076b2″]

SUMMARY:Wetskills-India (Kerala) 2019
DESCRIPTION:About The Event\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]In 2018 Kerala was facing devastating floods. New concepts of flood control are necessary to protect people\, economy and environment\, taking into account that more floods will come due to climate change. “Integrated Water Management and Flood Control“ was the central theme of this Wetskills event in Kerala\, India. \nA DRR team of Dutch water experts visited Kerala and studied the water situation in the area. Special attention is required during and after disasters to improve their access to recovery assistance. Empowerment is needed\, to help them advocate for themselves and to help them voice out issues that may improve the development of local mitigation and adaptation measures. Better participation of women in risk management initiatives is needed. One of the best practices in Kerala is Pink Alert (Kudumbasree)\, a permanent disaster management unit in Kerala\, managed and operated by women. How could new measures\, including capacity building training\, enhance the potential of women in disaster risk management and disaster relief plans in Kerala? \nFinal Poster – Winning team!\n \n\nTeam 1: Flood Education Kerala – Connecting students to community-based solutions\n\n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”56576″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””]Case 2: From SMART cities to SMART-Resilient cities\nIndia is working on transforming its cities into SMART cities. In 2018\, one of the heaviest floods in 100 years took the lives of 200 people in Kochi and the region\, and caused massive damage to infrastructure\, further affecting the economy and livelihoods of the people in the area. Kochi airport had to close for 2 weeks because of the damage. While monsoon season can bring much needed rainfall\, the season can also bring heavy floods\, while a delayed onset of the monsoon can leave Kerala facing water shortages and severe draught. How can Kochi authorities use SMART planning and infrastructure\, to increase the water storage capacity and reduce the effect of floods? and become a ‘SMART Resilient City’? \nFinal Poster \n\nTeam 2: How to make the city flood resilient? a smart and resilient approach\n\n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”56578″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case 3: Water Footprint for better Water-2-Agriculture allocation upstream\nThe State of Kerala demands a better upstream-downstream regime in order to avoid flood in the downstream area. Better allocation of water could lead to mitigation of floods while upstream agriculture could benefit from it. The Water Footprint is a scientifically proven method to measure and gain insight into the supply and demand of water for agriculture and even quantify it in terms of economic added value. How can the Water Footprint method be used in order to mitigate flood effects in terms upstream-downstream regime in Kerala? \nFinal Poster \n\nTeam 3: The NieuwPaadam Project – The added value of the Water Footprint for land- and water management in Kerala\n\n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”56580″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””]Case 4: Long Term Dredging Schemes for Flood Mitigation\nThe monsoon season between June and September brings 70% of Kerala’s rainfall. This water is necessary for sustaining the livelihoods of people\, but it is also causing heavy flooding as in 2018 and 2019. Well-maintained rivers\, canals and reservoirs could mitigate the effects of the monsoon. Dredging riverbeds and reservoirs will increase the capacity to retain floodwater. Improving small-scale watershed management\, and maintenance of water retaining constructions\, will avoid sedimentation of rivers. But most important\, this should be done in a long-term scheme to make it more efficient and effective. How could Kerala organize and finance a long-term maintenance scheme\, incl. dredging activities and improved watershed management\, leading to flood risk mitigation? \nFinal Poster \n\nTeam 4: Productive Dredging – How can a long term dredging scheme contribute to flood prevention?\n\n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”56574″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”56635\,56634\,56637\,56636″ img_size=”full” column_number=”4″ grayscale=”no” hover_icon=”none” images_space=”gallery_with_space”]Event Blogs\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Event Partners\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”51924″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”56306″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”55656″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”55657″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”56310″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”54106″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52154″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52334″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””]

DESCRIPTION:About The Event\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]First Wetskills Event in Bangladesh\nFor the first time ever\, a Wetskills Water Challenge was organized in Bangladesh! Through cooperation with the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology\, and the CORE project for Community Resilience for flood protection in urban delta areas\, Wetskills was in Dhaka and Sirajganj with a programme from June 30 – July 12\, 2019. \nCentral theme was flood resilience during the monsoon season in Bangladesh. \nThis edition of Wetskills brought together international participants and took place in the capital city Dhaka and the rural city of Sirajganj where the CORE pilot project is developed. The event was organized in close cooperation with BUET and the Dutch partners in the CORE poject (IHE Delft\, HKV Consultants and several SMEs). \nThe finals were organized in Dhaka on the 12th of July. \nWinning team was Sanitation Stars\, with their Gender-friendly Flood Proofing Sanitation System\, focusing on community based resiliences. Furthermore\, local conditions change frequently\, which impacts flow patterns for sub-critical events. While remote sensing imagery is available at an increasing level-of-detail\, local surveys remain necessary to provide the data required for a detailed digital terrain model which is essential for overland flood modeling. Current advancement in drones and photogrammetry improve the coverage and processing of local terrain surveys tremendously. In this case\, we develop and test the workflow for a drone-enhanced local flood model in a peri-urban area. With the drone we will fly the pilot-area. The resulting pictures can be used to produce a Digital Elevation Model (DEM). How can an accurate DEM be produced\, based on drone-enhanced images? And how can drone-taken pictures be processed into a video for communication purposes? \nFinal poster \n\nPoster Team No Fly Zone – Improving the accuracy of DEM\n\n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”55839″ img_size=”large” qode_css_animation=””]Case 2: Retrofit kits\, to protect peri-urban houses against frequent flood events\nCase owner: TUBE Barrier/CORE Bangladesh \nWhile developing flood resilience at community-based level requires an ensemble of socio-technical measures\, one of the major needs in poor peri-urban communities is the development of flood proofing kits to retrofit existing houses. Although varying in size\, most peri-urban houses consist of a clay floor\, a bamboo bearing structure and galvanized steel cladding\, which makes them vulnerable to floods. As communities are poor\, this subsequently means that resources to change or adapt the housing situation are very limited; relocation is often not an option while building a more durable\, flood resistant housing type is financially infeasible. The only remaining option is to retrofit the existing houses to at least protect them against frequent flood events with limited inundation depths. The task in this case is therefore to develop proposals for flood-proofing these houses\, by developing a retrofitting kit that is effective against medium inundations\, is easy to construct\, can be applied to an existing house and is cost-effective. \nFinal poster \n\nPoster Team Retrofit – Lifting the floor to protect households from flood\n\n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”55843″ img_size=”large” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case 3: A systematic approach to determine the effects of the Restoration of the Old Brahmaputra river\nCase owner: Deltares \nRestoration of the flow of the Old Brahmaputra river can result in significant social\, environmental and technical effects. The goal is to determine these effects on a primarily qualitative basis\, looking at the river from a systems perspective\, thus taking into account dependencies between various disciplines and actors. What does this restoration entail from e.g. a hydrological perspective? How can local communities along the river benefit from a restoration? What are the (changes) in the ecosystem services? And what does the restoration mean for the river system itself? \nFinal poster \n\nPoster Restoration Old Brahmaputra River and its’ Social Perspective \n\n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”55841″ img_size=”large” qode_css_animation=””]Case 4: Saniproofing\, design of flood-proof sanitation facilities for poor peri-urban communities\n\nCase owner: Urban Wetlands/CORE Bangladesh \nIn Bangladesh\, many peri-urban areas are exposed to floods during the rainy season\, often lasting for weeks or months. Although communities are often haphazardly adapted to these flooded conditions\, the provision of adequate sanitation is a continuing worry. Yet\, it is one of the key factors in limiting water-borne diseases that typically affect the urban poor during the wet season.  How can we design flood-proof sanitation for these communities\, as well as additional vital services (e.g. water supply) in a robust\, cost-effective manner? It should be easy to maintain\, and using local materials and construction techniques. \nFinal poster – Winning team!\n \n\nPoster Sanitation Stars – Genderfriendly Flood Proofing Sanitation System\n\n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”55845″ img_size=”large” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Event Blogs\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][no_blog_list type=”boxes” image_size=”landscape” show_thumbnail=”yes” number_of_columns=”4″ overlay_icon=”1″ order_by=”date” order=”DESC” title_tag=”h5″ display_excerpt=”1″ info_position=”top” post_info_text_transform=”none” post_info_font_weight=”700″ post_info_font_style=”normal” display_category=”0″ display_date=”1″ date_place=”over_title” display_author=”0″ display_comments=”0″ display_button=”1″ icon_pack=”font_elegant” fe_icon=”arrow_right” button_icon_position=”right” number_of_posts=”10″ overlay_color=”rgba(0\,221\,207\,0.59)” category=”wetskills-bangladesh” text_length=”160″ title_size=”28″ title_color=”#0076b2″ post_info_font_size=”20″ post_info_color=”rgba(0\,221\,207\,0.59)” post_info_font_family=”Montserrat” post_info_letter_spacing=”-0\,5″ date_size=”21″ box_info_padding=”40px 5px 5px 5px” button_text=”READ MORE” button_background_color=”rgba(0\,221\,207\,0.59)” button_hover_background_color=”#0076b2″ button_border_color=”rgba(0\,221\,207\,0.59)” button_hover_border_color=”#0076b2″][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Previous Wetskills events in Asia\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”51887\,54583\,54842\,52529\,52540″ column_number=”5″ grayscale=”no” hover_icon=”none” images_space=”gallery_with_space”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Event Partners\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”55054″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”55050″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”55055″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52334″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”55058″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”55053″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”55056″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52245″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”55051″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”55052″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”55057″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52243″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””]About the CORE project (overall project for this Wetskills event)\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]\nCORE Bangladesh: COmmunity REsilience through rapid prototyping of flood proofing technologies\n\n\nThis project aims to develop prototypes of community-based flood mitigation and adaptation measures in specific case-study towns/neighborhoods (so-called Learning Spaces) in the Bangladesh delta\, and to develop a framework for up-scaling and integration these measures into larger flood-risk mitigation schemes. \n\nThe effectiveness of flood-risk management in The Netherlands depends on effective stakeholder coordination through governance arrangements developed over many years of coping with floods. In this research project\, we will repeat this process on a shortened time scale\, and aim to develop coordinating capabilities in flood-risk management for the urban poor in a developing country. We will initiate and support community-based innovation\, development\, production\, and implementation of small-scale technical innovations that alleviate immediate flood-related nuisance (‘wet feet’) in a town in Bangladesh\, with the aim to increase coordinating capacity for flood risk management and focus this emerging governance capacity on developing ever longer term\, severer risks\, increasing scale and more sustainable solution for flood risk management. Our research in this Learning Space addresses a major knowledge gap on how community based flood mitigation and adaptation measures both technological and institutional develop into ‘measures of scale’. This will enhance flood resiliency through demonstration and subsequent development of knowledge co-creation in collaboration with local partners and ultimately integration in flood management policies. \nJoin this Wetskills event!\n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]

Therefore\, we are looking for synergies between climate mitigation and adaptation. What measures can Rotterdam take to reach our climate goals and increase climate resilience at the same time? \nFinal poster \n\nPoster Team 2 – Using the Sun to Cool Down\n\n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”55703″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””]Case 3: Water dependenties of Chinese Megacities\nCase owner: Water Footprint Implementation \nCitizens of urban conglomerates need food\, energy and water; most of which are sourced from the surrounding hinterland. In order to fulfill urban demand for food and energy\, a large water footprint is created in these rural areas\, that may lead to increased water pollution and water scarcity. Taking two of China’s megacities\, Shanghai and Hangzhou\, as example\, this case challenges you to find out how ‘water dependent’ these Chinese megacities are on their hinterland virtual water supply? And how can these megacities secure a water-sustainable future? \nFinal poster \n\nPoster Team 3 – Water Footprint – From Grey to Green\n\n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”55704″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Event Partners\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”53910″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”53908″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”55337″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52334″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”55338″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”55343″ img_size=”460×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52155″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”55338″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52155″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52245″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52243″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Previous Wetskills Events in China and the region\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”53617\,53624\,53621\,53618\,53616″ column_number=”5″ grayscale=”no” hover_icon=”none” images_space=”gallery_with_space”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”54299\,54189\,54220\,53603\,53623″ column_number=”5″ grayscale=”no” hover_icon=”none” images_space=”gallery_with_space”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]

To provide a playing ground for innovations in the field of sustainable and clever use of energy and resources\, LabVlieland was created. Their current quest is for an out-of-the box design of an advanced\, mobile\, integrated Shelter system – AMIES in short. Think a self-sustainable\, closed-loop resource building\, built on industrial ecology principles with the latest circular technologies that can be readily deployed where needed. \nCase 2: Self-supportive cities and islands on water & energy \nCase owner: Waternet & Province of Fryslân \nWaternet wants to increase the pace of improving sustainability in the Dutchcapital. The goal for 2020 is being climate neutral concerning CO2. If we want to have a 100% sustainable energy supply\, we have to look for other sustainable energy sources in the near future. How can water contribute to this transition? And how can we learn from self sufficient islands\, considering a city as an island? A previous Wetskills team in South Korea came up with the ‘Water Wide Web’\, building an energy network where you can store energy on different levels close to households. Waternet wants the next team to work out this idea in more detail and come up with logical solutions we can really implement in the near future. \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case 3: Wastewater reuse for agriculture \nCase owner: Water Application Center and Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences \nIn the Netherlands\, almost all WWTP effluents are discharched onto surface water bodies like canals and rivers. As a result of climate change\, agriculture will be confronted more and more with yield losses due to drought. The use of alternative freshwater sources\, such as treated wastewater from industries and sewage treatment plants\, can reduce drought damage. One interesting opportunity may be to combine wastewater (post)treatment and agriculture (crops / biomass growth). Under what conditions and on which scale could the reuse of (treated) wastewater in agriculture be beneficial? \nCase 4: BioBizzHub for energizing start-ups to scale up their business  \nCase owner: Paques \nWaterCampus Leeuwarden is an important driver for new business in the water technology sector\, and has facilitated the start of many new companies in the past 15 years. A crucial step for these new companies is to “scale up” and “go to market”. The new BioBizzHub is set-up for this purpose. Here\, startups can benefit from dedicated test and office facilities and the engineering and market experience of Paques. How can BioBizzHub find and attract companies from outside the Netherlands to join this initiative and benefit from the BioBizzHub. \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]The Wetskills organization is looking for Case Owners; companies\, knowledge institutes and organisations that formulate their case and support this Wetskills programme and formulate a case. SUMMARY:Wetskills-China 2018
DESCRIPTION:About The Event\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Back to the Wetskills roots: China!!\nThe first Wetskills Water Challenge ever was organized in China during the WorldExpo 2010 in Shanghai. Guess where we aimed to go this year as well… China!! The Wetskills Foundation invites Bachelor\, Master\, PhD students and recent graduates to apply for the Wetskills Water Challenge programme in Hangzhou and Shanghai. This edition of Wetskills will take the participants to the nice city of Hangzhou with the beautiful XiHu (West Lake). The presentations will be organized in the framework of and close cooperation with the largest water event worldwide: Aquatech China in Shanghai (31 May – 2 June). So Wetskills will stay in booming Shanghai for the last days as well!  \n \nTo all who are interested in water challenges and the ancient heritage of Hangzhou and the booming Shanghai: this is your chance! Apply now for this great opportunity to experience China and its water! \nWe are looking for local and international students and Young Professionals\, who are passionate about water and excited to work in mixed teams for transdisciplinary water solutions. Apply for Wetskills China 2018 (period: 20 May 2018 – 1 June 2018). \nWe are looking for you! Read the Announcement for Participants Wetskills China 2018. \nApplication Deadline\nSome last positions left for Chinese and international candidates (on a First come\, first served basis). \nCosts\nParticipation costs for international participants or local participants without accommodation in Hangzhou and Shanghai are 425 euros or equivalent in Chinese yuan. The fee includes accommodation\, programme costs\, supervision\, some social activities\, field trips\, working locations\, presentations by experts and the awarding event at the Aquatech Shanghai exhibition & congress. It does not include transport\, some meals\, other daily costs. Participants are responsible for their own travel expenses (like plane tickets and some local travel)\, meals during working days and other personal costs. \nThe fee for participants from China\, who do not need accommodation\, are 80 euros or equivalent in Chinese yuan\, including the above arrangements\, except for the accommodation in Hangzhou. \nDuring past editions participants often successfully arranged financial compensation for their Wetskills participation from their university or employer. We therefore strongly encourage applicants to inquire about funding opportunities to compensate the costs (university mobility funds\, travel allowance etc.). \nMore information\nFor more information about this event\, contact Johan Oost (johan.oost@wetskills.com) or Ioana Dobrescu (ioana.dobrescu@wetskills.com). \nInformation\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Registration deadlines\nSome last positions left for Chinese and international candidates \n(First come\, first served) \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][no_button icon_pack=”font_awesome” fa_icon=”fa-pencil” icon_position=”right” target=”_self” font_weight=”” text=”Register” link=”/wetskills-china-2018-registration/” icon_color=”#ffffff” background_color=”#43dbbd” hover_background_color=”#0076b2″ border_color=”#43dbbd” hover_border_color=”#0076b2″][vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][no_button icon_pack=”font_awesome” fa_icon=”fa-facebook” icon_position=”right” target=”_self” font_weight=”” text=”Attend on Facebook” link=”https://www.facebook.com/events/1494853417298832/” icon_color=”#ffffff”][vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Programme Wetskills-China 2018 \n  \nOverview of study cases Wetskills-China 2018 \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Wetskills in general\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Wetskills leaflet and track record since 2010 \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”53619\,53622\,53623″ column_number=”5″ grayscale=”no” hover_icon=”none” images_space=”gallery_with_space”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Event Cases\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case 1: Detention Basin in Coastal Plain Areas in Zhejiang Province\nCase owner: Zhejiang Institute of hydraulics and Estuary \nThe coastal plain areas in Zhejiang Province is prone to typhoon storm surge disasters and waterlogging disasters due to the backwater effect of high tide level during torrential rain periods. It is envisaged to build a detention basin in coastal plain areas\, which connects with open seas under normal conditions. When a strong rainfall is predicted and there is low tide level at open seas\, the sluice gate is closed to keep a low water level in the detention basin so that floods can be discharged into the detention basin when the strong rain comes\, minimizing the waterlogging possibility. At the same time\, the detention basin would form a buffer zone to enhance the capability against typhoon storm surges. \nCase 2: (Pour) water versus soil energy\nCase owner: Westland Municipality \nIn a greenhouse horticulture municipality\, such as Westland Municipality \, both energy management and the availability of good irrigation water are essential for production of the crops. The subsurface is a source and buffer that are interesting and used for both renewable energy (with cold-heat storage) and irrigation water. But this leads to a conflict between both due to the limited capacity in aquifers. How can we use the existing aquifere capacity for both renewable energy and irrigation water in an harmonious way? \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case 3: Adapting to climate change in Overijssel\nCase owner: Province Overijssel \nProvince Overijssel is working on becoming water robust and climate resilient in 2050. This starts by identifying the areas with the highest risk and by engaging in dialogue with the stakeholders. The challenge is to connect themes such as water\, nature\, agriculture\, energy\, mobility and spatial development in the approach. Working together with municipalities\, waterboards and other stakeholders is essential. How do we identify the biggest bottlenecks and work together in “good governance” to tackle them? \nCase 4: Integrated and standardized management platform for whole life cycle\nCase owner: Zhejiang yugong information technology co.\, ltd \n\n\n\nWater conservancy project from construction\, operation until scrap seems to be a living life\, as a water conservancy people we should manage it wholeheartedly in the whole process of its life\, with the applications of modern technology. Recently\, we developed the integrated management software system of water conservancy project construction process\, standardized operation management software system of water conservancy project\, and some kinds of optimization scheduling decision software system\, etc. How can this provide decision-making for the whole life optimization management of water conservancy project: to improve the service life of water conservancy project and benefit people for a long time! \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]The Wetskills organization is looking for Case Owners; companies\, knowledge institutes and organisations that formulate their case and support one of the Wetskills programmes worldwide.
