SUMMARY:Wetskills-Oman 2025
DESCRIPTION:About The Event\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]6th Wetskills in Oman: for the first time in Salalah (south Oman)!\nBecause of the great successes of previous Wetskills Challenges in Oman (5 events since 2012 up to 2024) we are thrilled to organize the sixth event. And for the first time in the green part of Oman: Salalah! When the temperatures are high in Muscat\, this southern region is a great place to visit in August! \nWe got 4 cases from Omani partners and had 19 participants on board. The Wetskills Finals and Awarding Ceremony were held on 10 September. This was a unique chance to present our solutions for a water smart society and engage with others. Follow us in this event! \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Watch the compilation movie of this event!\n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Event info\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Programme Wetskills-Oman (Salalah) 2025 (draft) \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Terms & Conditions Wetskills-Oman 2025 \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Follow Wetskills\nFacebookXInstagramLinkedInYouTube\n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”64544″ img_size=”full” css=”” qode_css_animation=””]Joining this Wetskills Event – What do you get?\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]A unique learning experience where you will tackle real-life water challenges with your own team! \n\nYou will increase your skills in: international cooperation; problem solving\, cross-cultural and interdisciplinary teamwork\, networking and presenting (pitch & poster);\nYou will get the opportunity to connect with other international water students/young professionals;\nYou will exclusively visit the Wetskills finals and awarding workshop at the Arab Youth Forum;\nYou will visit Salalah and surroundings: water-related\, natural and cultural sites\, and meetings with water experts;\nYou will learn\, network and experience more about international and regional water challenges\, the main stakeholders and organizations\, contemporary issues and current business opportunities;\nYou will receive a certificate of participation upon completion of the program.\n\nMore information\nContact: Loay Alatrash\, loay.alatrash@wetskills.com\, Ahmed Al-Busaidi\, ahmed99@squ.edu.om\, or Johan Oost\, johan.oost@wetskills.com. \nFinals and Awarding Ceremony\n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”64793″ img_size=”full” css=””][vc_single_image image=”64792″ img_size=”full” css=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”64796″ img_size=”full” css=””][vc_single_image image=”64794″ img_size=”full” css=””][vc_single_image image=”64795″ img_size=”full” css=””]Event Blogs\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]	\n \n Wetskills-Oman 2025: Youth Innovation in Salalah\, OmanBlogs\, News\, Wetskills-Oman 20257 months agoby: Ioana Dobrescu\, Supervisor in Oman on behalf of Wetskills Foundation From 31 August to 10 September 2025\, the sixth edition of the Wetskills Water Challenge in Oman took place… \n \n	\n \n Free day with sightseeing\, and bonding with the teamBlogs\, Wetskills-Oman 20258 months agoWetskills-Oman 2025 – Blog 5 – As part of the Wetskills program in Salalah\, we had a designated free day to explore the unique natural of Dhofar. This lost opportunity is significant\, as capturing Khareef rainwater could reduce reliance on overdrawn groundwater and costly desalination. As millions of cubic meters are wasted annually\, issues like flooding\, groundwater depletion\, and rising salinity are intensifying. Climate changes is also leading to more intense rainfall during the Khareef and unpredictable weather patterns throguhout the year. There is an urgent need for integrated\, scalable\, holistic and sustainable approaches to rainfall harvesting\, in the region and across Oman\, to tap this resource and address water security challenges. \nCase 2: Monitoring water quality in distribution networks using AI\n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case owner: Nama Water (Muscat) \nEnsuring safe drinking water is a growing challenge as treated water travels through vast and aging distribution networks. This case focuses on innovative strategies to monitor and maintain water quality across Oman’s water supply systems. Participants will explore how real-time sensors\, smart monitoring tools\, and AI-based analytics can improve water safety\, detect contamination risks early\, and support faster response actions. The case also addresses practical constraints such as infrastructure limitations\, budget\, and workforce capacity. Participants will develop integrated\, scalable solutions to help utilities maintain high-quality water from source to tap. \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Pitch & Poster – Winning team! \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”64768″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” img_link_target=”_blank” css=””]Pitch & Poster \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”64770″ img_size=”full” style=”vc_box_outline” onclick=”img_link_large” img_link_target=”_blank” css=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case 3: Strategic review of atmospheric water harvesting technologies\n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case owner: MEDRC \nOman\, characterized by arid and semi-arid climatic conditions\, faces persistent challenges related to freshwater scarcity. Despite limited rainfall and high evaporation rates\, many regions—particularly along the coastal areas—experience relatively high humidity levels\, especially during the summer months. This atmospheric moisture presents a largely untapped opportunity for sustainable water generation through Atmospheric Water Harvesting (AWH) technologies. By leveraging Oman’s unique climatic profile\, particularly in humid zones such as Dhofar and the Al Batinah coast\, AWH systems offer a promising supplementary water source that can support water security\, especially in remote or water-stressed communities. \nCase 4: Solving Persistent Sulphide Contamination in Drinking Water\n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case owner: Nama Dhofar \nSupplying safe and clean drinking water is one of the most pressing challenges in Salalah\, where groundwater and desalination plants form a vital part of the city’s water system. Nama Dhofar brings forward a key issue for innovation: the persistent presence of hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) in raw water. Despite reverse osmosis (RO) treatment\, residual sulphide levels remain around 0.8 mg/L\, leading to a “rotten egg” odor and repeated non-compliance with drinking water standards. How can Nama Dhofar rethink and improve RO technology or propose alternative treatment steps that can fully eliminate H₂S\, ensuring odor-free\, safe\, and reliable drinking water for the community? \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Pich & Poster \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”64772″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” img_link_target=”_blank” css=””]Pich & Poster \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”64774″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” img_link_target=”_blank” css=””]Event Partners\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”53806″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”64676″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”62807″ img_size=”220×125″ css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”64675″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”53546″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”53049″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”57060″ img_size=”220×125″ css=”” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52334″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””]Previous Events in Oman\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”61494\,61498\,61541\,61542\,61545\,61543″ img_size=”medium” column_number=”4″ grayscale=”no” hover_icon=”none” images_space=”gallery_with_space”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]

Hydrogen can be used in various sectors\, such as transportation\, chemistry and electricity\, and can contribute to decarbonizing the gas networks. Hydrogen can be produced from different sources\, some of which are renewable\, such as biomass. The production of hydrogen demands water to create this green energy source. Nama Water Services is working on utilizing treated wastewater for producing green hydrogen and asks for an inspiration guide with the best international practices in this field. \nCase 2: Compensating of water use\nCase owner: Water Footprint Implementation (WFI) \nIn March 2023\, Water Footprint Implementation (WFI) and various partners successfully launched Water Footprint Compensation during the United Nations Water Conference in New York. Water compensation is a concept that implies a water user can mitigate (the negative impacts of) their water consumption by taking action to replenish\, restore or protect the water system from which the water has been abstracted. it is based on the principle of a litre for a litre. Oman is an arid country with scarce water resources. How can Oman benefit from the concept of WF Compensation to ensure an increase in water availability or quality? \nCase 3: Water from air\n\nCase owner: Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) \nThe case is about the problem of salt affected lands and water scarcity in Oman\, and the potential solution of atmospheric water harvesting (AWH). AWH is a technology that extracts water from the air\, especially in coastal areas with high temperature and humidity. The case asks how AWH can help Oman’s agriculture and drinking water sectors become more sustainable\, and what are the best options and recommendations for using green technology to produce water. The case will evaluate the weather data\, the efficiency of different machines\, and the economic feasibility of AWH. \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Pitch & Poster \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Pitch & Poster \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Pitch & Poster \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case 4: Turning the (red) tide\nCase owner: Nama Water Services (NWS) \nHarmful Algal Blooms (HAB – red tides) are frequent events in Omani coastal waters affecting marine life and desalination plants. Caused by natural and local factors\, hard to detect and predict. Current detection methods are based on water sampling or chlorophyll measurement\, time-consuming and limited by sub-surface blooms. Current mitigation methods are based on chlorination\, DAF\, or filtration\, high environmental impact\, ineffective at high algal concentrations\, expensive\, and require chemical dosing. How can new HAB mitigation methods be incorporated in NWS? Consider HAB mitigation techniques from around the world and the Security of Supply (SoS) research to reduce risks. \nCase 5: Towards wastewater treatment with CO2 recovery\nCase owner: GUtech \nWith strong global commitment to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050\, many efforts are focusing on decarbonization and reaching a balance between anthropogenic emissions and mitigation strategies. In the wastewater treatment sector\, substantial achievements were made in terms of energy efficiency improvement\, clean and green energy use and renewable energy recovery from wastewater. Sofar\, very few efforts investigated the possibility of using wastewater treatment technologies for CO2 capture and utilization. Would it be possible to realize an integrated approach with on-site direct CO2 capture\, storage and utilization in wastewater treatment plants? Could carbon-emitting technologies be converted into resources recovery facilities? What would be the economic\, environmental and social direct impacts and benefits? \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Pitch & Poster \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Pitch & Poster – winning team! \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Event Partners\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”53049″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”53546″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”55015″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52334″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”62807″ img_size=”220×125″ qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”62809″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”54106″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52243″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””]Previous Events in Oman\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”61494\,61498\,61541\,61542\,61545\,61543″ img_size=”medium” column_number=”4″ grayscale=”no” hover_icon=”none” images_space=”gallery_with_space”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]

The system uses water\, aquatic plants (i.e.: reeds\, duckweed)\, naturally occurring microorganisms and a filter bed (usually of sand\, soils and/or gravel). This study aims to find best practices in worldwide applied Constructed wetlands\, and design it to receive domestic wastewater. Keeping in mind that the system should have very high performance and meeting Omani Standard of Treated Effluent Discharge as mentioned in MD 145/93. \nCase 2: Growing Plants in the Desert\nCase owner: Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) \nThe ‘Ashjar Initiative’ was launched to combat desertification\, reduce land degradation\, and preserve wild plants. Within the framework of cooperation between the Environment Agency and the private sector represented by the Petroleum Development Oman\, the national aim is to plant 10 million trees. The challenge is to sustain the growth of those plants under desert conditions\, with hot weather\, low rainfall and sandy soils that are poor in holding moisture content. Options might be the use of Atmospheric water harvesting\, Water boxes or Smart Soil\, and/or integration of these options. \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Poster & Pitch \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Poster & Pitch – winning team! \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case 3: Dealing with salinization\nCase owner: Hoogheemraadschap van Delfland \nSalinization is a familiar threat in the area of water authority ‘Hoogheemraadschap van Delfland’ in the Netherlands. The most serious causes of salinization\, which can occur on a large scale\, are penetrating seawater along the coast and brackish groundwater rising (salt seepage). At the moment this salinization is mainly combated by flushing all water systems. An expensive and complex system but as long as there is enough water it works. But is there enough water? Due to drier summers\, and increasing salt seepage pressure due to the rising sea level\, Delfland has to find other strategies. How can The Water Authority Delfland adapt to or even utilize encroaching salinization? \nCase 4: Water Footprint Compensation useful in Oman?\nCase owner: Water Footprint Implementation (WFI)  \nGlobal water resources are under pressure\, also in the semi-arid to arid areas in Oman. The country receives very little rain and has high temperatures\, this makes it a water scarce country. As water supply is limited\, expensive water desalinization is often used to act as an additional source of freshwater. Oman intends to expand its agricultural export and create new industries\, but faces problems with limiting water resources and challenges due to climate change. To respond to this need\, the Water Footprint Implementation concept intends to link water consumption for production to water compensation activities. How can Oman make use of the Water Footprint Compensation (WFC) concept? \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Poster & Pitch \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Poster & Pitch\n \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space height=”12px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Previous Events in Oman\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Event Partners\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”53049″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”53546″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”55015″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52334″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”56621″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”54106″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”57060″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52243″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””]

SUMMARY:Wetskills-United Arab Emirates 2022
DESCRIPTION:About The Event\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]United Arab Emirates 2022: from WorldExpo Shanghai to Dubai!\nWetskills Foundation and partners organized another great water challenge event: in Dubai\, United Arab Emirates. \nIn a hybrid format (online with some in-person activities) participants from various countries (UAE\, The Netherlands\, Colombia\, India\, Nigeria\, Germany) worked together in teams with each its own challenge. The cases are provided by our partners UAE University\, RVO\, PureBlue Water and Witteveen+Bos\, in close cooperation with the Dutch Dubai programme of The Netherlands government. \nDuring the Finals on Sunday 16 January\, the teams presented the results to an international jury in The Netherlands Pavilion of the Dubai 2020 World Expo. This hybrid event was also the final part of the Wetskills 10 years Jubilee Celebrations. \n[vc_single_image image=”59143″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Wetskills once started at the Shanghai WorldExpo 2010\, so Wetskills ‘bridged’ the two WorldExpos and looked back to the results of many Wetskills events in many countries. \nThe Jury announced Team Falaj 2.0 as the winning team\, with their innovative but applicable concept to improve water management on small farm. ‘Most UAE small farms use groundwater for crop irrigation. Low groundwater levels and salinization are a growing problem\, and various water management strategies have already been proposed. The Wetskills team came up with a Tool to support farmers in identifying which strategy is most feasible for their own farm.’ This case was formulated by UAE University\, to focus on a very challenging problem. \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”59206″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””]Read the article in Gulf Today: ‘Dutch PM Mark Rutte dubs UAE as living hub of innovative business‘ with a part about Wetskills-United Arab Emirates 2022; Water reuse is one of the opportunities to mitigate the water stress in those cities. PureBlue’s decentral wastewater treatment units treat up until natural water quality and beyond. The goal is to enforce blue networks\, the concatenation of water bodies and infrastructure\, to let green networks\, like parks\, nature reserves and oases grow. PureBlue looks for creative implementation of their units in UAE cities to bring fresh water to locations that will benefit most from it. In addition\, social innovation is of large importance to convince people of the safety and environmental friendliness of treated wastewater. \nCase 2: A Sustainable Alternative to Water in Plastic\nCase owner: RVO.nl \nOn a regular day millions of people encounter one or more single use plastic water bottle. It is just a normal routine but the effect that it has on our planet is devastating to the entire ecosystem. A plastic bottle does not simply disappear once we recycle it or throw it away\, it is not biodegradable and becomes land and ocean litter. Organizations that go through a particularly high volume of plastic bottles consumption are University Campuses with vending machines and cafeteria and Hotels with plastic bottles distributed in each guest room. How can the use of “hydration stations” within these institutions be the solution to drastically reduce the impact that single use plastic has on the environment? \nPitch & Poster \n[vc_single_image image=”59230″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” qode_css_animation=””]Pitch & Poster \n[vc_single_image image=”59229″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space height=”64px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case 3: Decision-making tool for water management at small farms in UAE\nCase owner: United Arab Emirates University  \nPrivately owned farms of a size between two and six ha are very common in the UAE\, and mostly rely on groundwater for crop irrigation. In recent years the productivity of many of these farms has been threatened by increasing groundwater depletion and salinization. Various management strategies have been proposed to slow down groundwater deterioration and/or sustain agricultural production under increasing salinity. tools to facilitate such water management decision making are so far not available. It will maximize revenues at the farm level\, and/or create an overall long-term sustainability and environmental safety. How could a tool support an individual farmer or decision identifying of the most feasible water management strategy for UAE’s small farms? \nCase 4: Circular carbon zero water and resources recovery plant\nCase owner: Witteveen+Bos (The Netherlands) \nThe global water sector contributes about 5% of greenhouse gas (GHG)\, and this is calculated without the process-related emissions of CH4\, CO2 and N2O due to biological used water treatment. The UWTP’s are getting more efficient every day and water loops are being closed in municipal and industrial settings. However\, by improving removal performances the carbon emissions rise by energy demand\, chemical use\, and process emission. Improving water quality leads to increasing CO2 emissions. The Water and Resources Refinery\, developed by Witteveen+Bos and partners leads to a circular zero carbon used water treatment. How can the Water and Resources Refinery also solve these challenges for the United Arab Emirates and Singapore creating a future-proof and climate resilient water sector? \nPitch & Poster \n[vc_single_image image=”59228″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” qode_css_animation=””]Pitch & Poster \n[vc_single_image image=”59227″ img_size=”full” onclick=”img_link_large” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Event Partners\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”57038″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”58274″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”53049″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52334″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”59130″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”56310″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”59129″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”57060″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”53877″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”54075″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”58278″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52246″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Movie of Wetskills-Oman 2019\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Finals of Wetskills-Oman 2020\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Join this Wetskills event!

DESCRIPTION:About The Event\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Third Wetskills in Oman successfully wrapped-up \nTeam Wave Integration won the third Wetskills Water Challenge in Oman. The team came up with a creative solution to kick-start a sustainable and self-supportive local Water Footprint Network in Oman and combining experience jobs for talented female graduates. The case was formulated by a consortium of Water Footprint Implementation\, Oman Water Society\, Water Footprint Network and Sultan Qaboos University. These organizations aim to establish a local network for awareness and capacity development including the implementation of the Water Footprint concept. Maartje Wadman\, Junior Soil Advisor of Antea Group in The Netherlands\, presenter of the pitch for the winning team: “Really would like to thank everyone who made this Wetskills edition still an unforgettable experience. I am sure that I will come back to Oman and that I will join another Wetskills edition.” \nCoronavirus \nThe Coronavirus (COVID-19) affected the Wetskills programme in Oman. Despite all adaptive measures\, the shortening of 2 days and the postpone of the 2nd International conference on Water Resources in Arid Areas where the Finals & Awarding Ceremony were planned\, the programme went well\, the participants were satisfied\, and the results are promising. The Wetskills supervsiors Marcel Rompelman and Ahmed Al-Busaidi (SQU) managed to complete a quality programme in Muscat. \nRead more: Press-release Wetskills-Oman 2020 \nFore more information: Johan Oost\, johan.oost@wetskills.com and/or Ahmed Al-Busaidi\, ahmed99@squ.edu.om. \n— \nThe 2020 central theme of Wetskills Events\, celebrating 10 years of Wetskills:\n‘VALUING FUTURE WATER LEADERS SHAKING THE WATER-ENERGY-FOOD COCKTAIL WITH THEIR INCLUSIVE & CATALYTIC CAPACITY’. \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Event info\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Programme Wetskills-Oman 2020 \nTerms & Conditions Wetskills-Oman 2020 \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][no_button icon_pack=”font_awesome” fa_icon=”fa-facebook” icon_position=”right” target=”_self” font_weight=”” text=”Attend on Facebook” link=”https://www.facebook.com/events/2190960907875521/” icon_color=”#ffffff”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Movie Wetskills-Oman 2019 \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Follow Wetskills\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][no_icons icon_pack=”font_elegant” fa_icon=”fa-facebook” fa_size=”fa-lg” custom_size=”30″ type=”normal” rotated_shape=”no” icon_shadow=”no” inner_border=”no” back_to_top_icon=”” link=”https://www.facebook.com/Wetskills-496271977097972″ anchor_icon=”” target=”_blank” icon_color=”#0076b2″ hover_icon_color=”#43dbbd” margin=”0px 12px 0px 0px” fe_icon=”social_facebook”]     [no_icons icon_pack=”font_elegant” fa_icon=”fa-twitter” fa_size=”fa-lg” custom_size=”30″ type=”normal” rotated_shape=”no” icon_shadow=”no” inner_border=”no” back_to_top_icon=”” link=”http://twitter.com/wetskills” anchor_icon=”” target=”_blank” icon_color=”#0076b2″ hover_icon_color=”#43dbbd” margin=”0px 12px 0px 0px” fe_icon=”social_twitter”]     [no_icons icon_pack=”font_elegant” fa_icon=”fa-instagram” fa_size=”fa-lg” custom_size=”30″ type=”normal” rotated_shape=”no” icon_shadow=”no” inner_border=”no” back_to_top_icon=”” link=”https://www.instagram.com/wetskills/” anchor_icon=”” target=”_blank” icon_color=”#0076b2″ hover_icon_color=”#43dbbd” margin=”0px 12px 0px 0px” fe_icon=”social_instagram”]     [no_icons icon_pack=”font_elegant” fa_icon=”fa-twitter” fa_size=”fa-lg” custom_size=”30″ type=”normal” rotated_shape=”no” icon_shadow=”no” inner_border=”no” back_to_top_icon=”” link=”https://www.linkedin.com/groups/2949484″ anchor_icon=”” target=”_blank” icon_color=”#0076b2″ hover_icon_color=”#43dbbd” margin=”0px 12px 0px 0px” fe_icon=”social_linkedin”]     [no_icons icon_pack=”font_elegant” fa_icon=”fa-youtube-square” fe_icon=”social_youtube” fa_size=”fa-lg” custom_size=”30″ type=”normal” rotated_shape=”no” icon_shadow=”no” inner_border=”no” back_to_top_icon=”” link=”https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJmPNM9roCkR1uvgJMHqpvA” anchor_icon=”” target=”_blank” icon_color=”#0076b2″ hover_icon_color=”#43dbbd” margin=”0px 12px 0px 0px”] \nOverview programme\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]The Finals\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Field visits to Haya Water and Nizwa\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”57289\,57290\,57291\,57292″ img_size=”medium” column_number=”4″ grayscale=”no” hover_icon=”none” images_space=”gallery_with_space”][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”57293\,57294\,57296\,57297″ img_size=”medium” column_number=”4″ grayscale=”no” hover_icon=”none” images_space=”gallery_with_space”][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”57299\,57303\,57300\,57301″ img_size=”medium” column_number=”4″ grayscale=”no” hover_icon=”none” images_space=”gallery_with_space”]Event Cases\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case 1: Turn Energy to Water and back. Creating a cross-sectoral communication\nCase owner: Water Footprint Implementation \nOman is a water-scarce country\, and energy-rich when looking at the large (fossil) energy resources. Energy in Oman is rather cheap and the main catalyst for its economy. Oman is also facing the world’s sustainability challenge of lowering the use of fossil energy and the transition to alternative energy production. But are stakeholders in Oman aware that this also affects the use of its valuable and scarce water? Various Ministries are invloved\, e.g. Water\, Energy\, but also Internal affairs and Economy. Team challenge: How could the determination of the Water Footprint of Oman’s energy-mix\, and the Carbon Footprint of Oman’s water use\, contribute to cross-sectoral communication? \nCase 2: Visual Problem Appraisal for Integrated Water Management in Oman\nCase owner: Van Hall Larenstein\n \nTo achieve the ambitions of the National Water Resource Master Plan\, it is envisioned that young Omani need to learn about Water management issues in their country. Involved institutions are exploring innovative learning strategies with a potential to stimulate water management knowledge and expertise with an interdisciplinary focus. In the search for a learning strategy that caters for an action-research orientation on water management\, Wetskills Oman is exploring the potential of a series of film-based interviews for distance learning (Visual Problem Appraisal). \nCase 3: Impact of NON-domestic wastewater\nCase owner: Haya Water \nDischarging Non-Domestic Wastewater to the sewerage system is an operational\, environmental and safety risk. This can also cause odours\, dangerous gases\, accelerated corrosion\, and sewer network blockage. It can affect the sewage treatment processes\, and adversely impact bio-solids and effluent quality. Moreover\, discharging Non-Domestic Wastewater to the sewer poses a health and safety risk to personnel working in and around the sewerage system\, due to substances in the industrial wastewater or their reactions with other substances. This Case study aims to reduce the impact\, and protect Haya Water assets from harmful disposal of Non-Domestic Wastewater into Haya Water sewage network and STP’s. \nFinal Pitch & Poster \n[vc_empty_space height=”8 px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”57382″][vc_empty_space height=”16 px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Final Pitch & Poster \n[vc_empty_space height=”8 px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”57383″][vc_empty_space height=”16 px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Final Pitch & Poster \n[vc_empty_space height=”8 px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”57384″][vc_empty_space height=”16 px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case 4: Chances for Agroforestry in Oman using treated effluent\nCase owner: Sultan Qaboos University\, department of Soil Sciences\n \nOver 15 years ago a country study was done to investigate the possibilities of forests in Oman. The study showed it is critical to integrate planted trees and forests in more holistic approaches: Agroforestry. That means\, to provide environmental services\, stimulate biodiversity benefits\, and meet people’s short and long-term needs. The creation of demonstration sites was suggested. What are the chances for Agroforestry in Oman? And in what way could treated effluent be used in Agroforestry? \nCase 5: Sustainable embedding of the Water Footprint in Oman\nCase owners: Sultan Qaboos University\, Water Footprint Implementation\, Oman Water Society & Water Footprint Network\n \nWater Footprint has the potential to become a leading concept for quantifying freshwater use in Oman. The Water Footprint Network (WFN) established worldwide several hubs\, each with a local network focusing on research\, awareness raising and capacity building about the Water Footprint concept. In 2019\, WFN and the Sultan Qaboos University discussed on the possibilities of creating a Water Footprint Hub in Oman\, in collaboration with other partners. This hub should also focus on the implementation of projects to bring the Water Footprint Theory into practice in Oman. How could the Case Owners set-up a sustainable and self-supportive Water Footprint Hub in Oman? \nFinal Pitch & Poster \n[vc_empty_space height=”8 px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”57385″][vc_empty_space height=”16 px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Final Pitch & Poster \n[vc_empty_space height=”8 px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_gallery interval=”3″ images=”57386″][vc_empty_space height=”16 px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Event Partners\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”53049″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”53546″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”53806″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52334″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”55015″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”54106″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”53810″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”55011″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”56621″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52257″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52245″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52243″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””]Event Blogs\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][no_blog_list type=”boxes” image_size=”landscape” show_thumbnail=”yes” number_of_columns=”4″ overlay_icon=”1″ order_by=”date” order=”DESC” title_tag=”h5″ display_excerpt=”1″ info_position=”top” post_info_text_transform=”none” post_info_font_weight=”700″ post_info_font_style=”normal” display_category=”0″ display_date=”1″ date_place=”over_title” display_author=”0″ display_comments=”0″ display_button=”1″ icon_pack=”font_elegant” fe_icon=”arrow_right” button_icon_position=”right” number_of_posts=”9″ overlay_color=”rgba(0\,221\,207\,0.59)” category=”wetskills-oman-2020″ text_length=”160″ title_size=”28″ title_color=”#0076b2″ post_info_font_size=”20″ post_info_color=”rgba(0\,221\,207\,0.59)” post_info_font_family=”Montserrat” post_info_letter_spacing=”-0\,5″ date_size=”21″ box_info_padding=”40px 5px 5px 5px” button_text=”READ MORE” button_background_color=”rgba(0\,221\,207\,0.59)” button_hover_background_color=”#0076b2″ button_border_color=”rgba(0\,221\,207\,0.59)” button_hover_border_color=”#0076b2″]

SUMMARY:Wetskills-Oman 2019
DESCRIPTION:About The Event\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Time for another Wetskills Challenge back in the Sultanate of Oman\, the country of Arab horses\, 3\,156 kilometers coastline\, kingfish and kebab\, fjord-like landscape (the Norway of the Middle East!)\, aromas and knives (khanjar\, no worries – now a days only worn forceremonial events). But Oman is also a country with severe challenges\, including droughts and water scarcity\, water salinity and desertification. As one of the oldest human-inhabited places in the world\, Oman now faces the impact of human development. Those challenges cannot be addressed without considering water\, energy and food as an integrated whole (nexus) and Oman is very well aware of that. Oman and the rest of the Gulf region are excelling with their WEF nexus approach and this offers a great context for our next Wetskills Challenge. \nFrom 15-25 March 2019 this new edition was organised in Muscat\, together with local Wetskills host Sultan Qaboos University. We also teamed up with the Embassy of The Kingdom of The Netherlands and Omani partners MEDRC\, PDO\, Haya water and Omani Water Society. This Wetskills event was dedicated to the Central theme: ‘Water-Energy-Food Nexus’ (also the theme of the WorldExpo Dubai 2020\, where Wetskills Foundation will be present as well). The final presentations was in line to the Celebration of the World Water Day 2019. The Wetskills program included workshops\, team building\, field trips to cases and water areas\, meetings and discussions with people in the field\, and water-related and cultural visits in and outside Muscat\, Haya Water wetlands and the PDO Museum. \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Practical information\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Program Wetskills-Oman 2019 \nPress release: Wetskills-Oman 2019 on Water-Energy-Food nexus \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]General Wetskills information\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Wetskills leaflet and track record \n[vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]	\n \n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n	\n \n	\n \n	[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Wetskills-Oman started with speed date discussions with water experts\, field visits and team building – and lots of opportunites for informal talks\, enjoying the old buildings and beautiful view of surroundings.\nPhoto’s row 1 | Group picture of Wetskills teams Oman 2019 | Team 5\, case Dutch Water Authorities on drought management\, in discussion with Mr Jauad El Kharraz\, director of research Middle East Desalination Research Center (MEDRC) in Muscat\, Oman | Dates\, important export product of Oman | Nakhal Fort in mountain area Oman\nPhoto’s row 2 | Hotsping near Rustaq\, teambuilding with feet in 65 °C water | Field visit to hotspring with small cascade\, enjoying and experiencing the importance of water in Oman | Water management: wadi\, with water only during heavy rain\, and a cross over road for the wadi \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Winning Team at the Awarding Ceremony\n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]At the Awarding Ceremony\, the jury congratulated all teams with the teamwork and the out-of-the-box solutions they presented. The final winner was the team working on Case 2\, finding a solution for Groundwater resources management for future water resilience. \nTrue Value of Water (TVW) – Team 2 worked on a PDO case to develop a straightforward and easy to implement method to assist water authorities to better characterize and allocate available groundwater resources in the Sultanate of Oman. What they developed is method based on a single\, meaningful monetary unit\, the True Value of Water (TVW). This new method quantifies the monetary value of aquifers\, linked to costs – the value of the energy required – to desalinate water. \nRead more > \nCases for Wetskills-Oman 2019\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case 1: Modular wastewater treatment units for flexible water quality improvement\nCase owner: Waterschapsbedrijf Limburg (WBL)\, developer of the Verdygo concept (The Netherlands) \nOman has a large desert area with nomadic tribes\, remote villages and oil production fields where water is scarce\, but also treatment of wastewater is a challenge. Verdygo is a new\, modular technology especially developed for flexible and cost effective water treatment. It is a design with modular\, container-sized sewage plant above ground and each container has different wastewater treatment techniques. This makes it possible to design your own modular Sewage Treatment Plant that fulfills specific needs\, is flexible and transportable. How could Vergygo contribute to improve the water quality in parts if Oman? \nFinal poster \nCase 2: Groundwater resources management for future water resilience\nCase owner: PDO (Oman) \nGroundwater is a scarce commodity in Oman. There is an urgent need to preserve it\, because of predicted water stress in the future and the potency of using groundwater for multiple uses. There are currently no clear and integrated guidelines to distinguish between exploitable and non-exploitable aquifers. How could Oman create a framework for an effective and sustainable groundwater resources management to protect the natural resources\, provide industry and citizens a reliable water source? \nFinal poster \nCase 3: Converting sludge to (renewable) energy\nCase owner: Haya Water (Oman) \nThe concept of energy from waste is getting popular across the globe nowadays. This concept is relevant in countries like Oman\, for minimization of their oil dependence. Moreover\, ‘waste to energy’ becomes a need within the new governmental vision 2040: encouraging renewable energy production. The implementation of methods at wastewater treatment facilities in regonal governarates is becoming a prominent challenge since the amount of sludge disposal is high and it poses environmental hazards. How could Haya Water create a practical model for effective renewable energy technologies of utilizing sludge and thus minimizing the dependence on electricity? \nFinal poster \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Case 4: Is it worth the water? Water sustainable Omani export products\nCase owner: Oman Water Society & Water Footprint Implementation \nOman is water scarce country\, with limited natural endowments. Water managers and policy makers should therefore closely monitor who is using the available resources and what for. At the same time\, Oman boasts a booming export sector that ships products that are proudly made in Oman to all corners of the Earth. Clearly the financial metrics look good – otherwise the products wouldn’t be sold for export. But how do these products score on water metrics? What is the water footprint of Oman’s most popular export products? What is the economic water productivity of this water that is virtually traded in exported products? How can Oman’s export become water sustainable? \nFinal poster \nCase 5: Droughts are everyone’s challenge\nCase owner: Dutch Water Authorities\n \nOman has a long tradition of coping with water stress and periods of severe droughts. They are experts in drought management. The Netherlands\, on the other hand\, is a water-rich country with a long-standing history of combatting floods and trying to keep our feet dry. They are experts in water management. Perhaps surprisingly\, the Netherlands is becoming more vulnerable for droughts too\, as the summer of 2018 showed. In their attempts to fight the effects of drought\, the Dutch applied their water management concepts and ideas that include stakeholder involvement and public participation a.o.. But does this Dutch approach work for droughts? Is water management different from drought management? How can both countries learn from each other’s historical battles with water? \nFinal poster \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Event Partners\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”53049″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”53546″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”53806″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52334″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”52711″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”54949″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”53810″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”55011″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”55015″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”54106″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52240″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52155″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_single_image image=”52155″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52257″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52245″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_single_image image=”52318″ img_size=”220×125″ style=”vc_box_rounded” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”53942\,52729\,53941\,53944\,54881″ column_number=”5″ grayscale=”no” hover_icon=”none” images_space=”gallery_with_space”]Event Blogs\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]

SUMMARY:SunGlacier Challenge in Oman
DESCRIPTION:About The Event\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]A global challenge to accelerate dew harvesting techniques that the world needs!\nThe partners of the SunGlacier Challenge invited teams of universities worldwide to join this unique challenge in Oman (20-25 March 2018) to make water from the air! Eventually 3 Dutch and Omani teams created their own SunGlacier (based on some provides techniques). On 22 March the challenge started with the 48 hours run. Main goal: going further with the latest techniques to provide the world with a new\, reliable and cheap water source! \nRead the daily blogs about the event and the experiences of participants and challenge partners or follow the Wetskills Social Media (Twitter\, Facebook and Instagram). \n\n  \nThis edition is the pilot of a five year programme. The partners aim to organize this SunGlacier Challenge yearly to speed up the information\, insights and knowledge of this technique for water supply. If you are interested\, contact Johan Oost (johan.oost@wetskills.com). \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Practical information\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][no_button icon_pack=”font_awesome” fa_icon=”fa-facebook” icon_position=”right” target=”_self” font_weight=”” text=”Attend on Facebook” link=”https://www.facebook.com/events/1887814874789933/” icon_color=”#ffffff”][vc_empty_space height=”16px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Programme:  \n\n20 March: Arrival\n21 March: Welcome\, preparation and testing\n22 March: Workshop at MEDRC\, start 48 hour run\n23 March: check devices\, cultural and social programme\n24 March: End of 48 run\, preparing for presentation\, Farewell dinner\n25 March: World Water Day celebration Sultan Qaboos University\, presentation\, awarding winners\n\n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Background\nIn 2010 Artist Ap Verheggen started the “Art meets Science” project SunGlacier: Harvest Water from Air\, fully powered by Solar Energy. With a team of volunteering experts ‘the SunGlacier Team’ he tested the limits to investigate how small and cheap we can build a water harvest machine that is off-grid\, powered by solar energy. Because solar energy can be limited and variable – with cloud cover and night cycles – we faced the challenge to use all energy as efficient as possible. The first SunGlacier sculpture is built with existing\, off-the-shelf technology\, but the latest versions are built with our own custom-designed technology. \nAp Verheggen combined design and technology and built several prototypes and one of them: “DC03” even runs without a battery\, a convertor\, or a fan. So nearly no maintenance and nothing can break. A cheap Peltier cooler is directly connected to a small solar panel and it makes drops of water. This technology is so promising because of low costs and durable components that Ap published all details on his website www.SunGlacier.com \nSunGlacier Challenge\nThe accelerate the speed of development of this promising SunGlacier technology\, some partners joined forces and decided to launch the SunGlacier Challenge\, with the goal to produce water out of air\, powered by solar energy. The competition location will be Oman\, with the partner Sultan Qaboos University. \nThe partners invite teams teams of university students\, young professionals from knowledge institutes or groups of friends in the field to build their own SunGlacier and join this competition. Note: The participants needs to be younger than 35 years. \nProgramme: Challenge\, Conference and social activities\nAfter the SunGlacier Challenge a Conference will be organized to learn more about the techniques from each other. Experts will be asked to join the Conference programme. \nIn the SunGlacier Challenge programme various social and cultural activities will be organized to meet each other and experience the culture and country of Oman. \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”53058\,53057\,53056\,53055″ column_number=”5″ grayscale=”no” hover_icon=”none” images_space=”gallery_with_space”][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]The Rules\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]The techniques\nThe techniques of SunGlacier will be public here. This is the basic information to use for your own SunGlacier. You can also make your own SunGlacier! \nThe competition\nMaximum 15 teams from various countries worldwide will be selected for this event. \nEvery team will get a standard solar pannel of 50 or 250 Watt (peak). Panel can turn with the sun if designed. A Peltier element (if used) can be replaced one time\, when broken. The winner of the competition is based on a 48 hours run for 50 or 250 Watt. \nSunGlacier is an Art Project so a special award will be provided for “best design” (based on a jury’s decision under chair of Ap Verheggen). \nThe prices will be announced in a later stage\, after attracting more partners. \nApplication deadlines\nThe official registration is via the registration button of this website. If you are interested as and/or already formed a team\, please send Mr. Tim van der Staaij an email. \nCosts\nThe participation of this challenge and the conference afterwards is free. Project partners and Sponsors will cover the costs. \nHowever the travel of the student team and the SunGlacier\, the accommodation and daily costs needs to be paid by the participating team. The team is allowed to find sponsors. \nMore information\nFor more information about participation as team or university\, please contact Marcel Rompelman (marcel.rompelman@wetskills.com). \nFor other information about companies as potential partner\, please contact Johan Oost (johan.oost@wetskills.com). \n[vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]Call for partners\n[vc_single_image image=”50762″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space image_repeat=”no-repeat”]The SunGlacier Challenge organization is looking for partners to step in the Challenge for the coming 5 years!\nWould you as company\, university\, knowledge institute\, government and/or NGO like to step in to make this SunGlacier Challenge a success?
